The Eagles led 10-7 midway through the match

COLUMBIA, Mo. (EMUEagles.com) –  Despite leading 10-7 at the midway point of the dual, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team dropped a tough match on the road to No. 4 Missouri, 24-10, Friday night, Jan. 15.

The Eagles moved to 7-4 in duals on the season, and 2-2 in Mid-American Conference action.  Meanwhile the Tigers extended their dual winning streak to 36 straight, moving to 8-0 on the season and 5-0 in conference.

EMU won three matches on the night, including a major decision win at the heavyweight match.  Out of the seven bouts they dropped, five of them came against top-10 nationally ranked opponents.

Things started up at 174 lbs. with redshirt junior Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio- St. Edward).  With no score after one, Davis got an escape and late takedown in second to take 3-0 lead into third.  Mizzou got the escape to begin the period, but Davis notched another takedown to make the score 5-1.  A reversal made things 5-3, but Davis held on for the 5-3 decision, moving his dual record to 8-3 on the season.

Next up was redshirt freshman Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven Brownstown) at 184 lbs., going up against No. 4 Willie Miklus.  The nationally ranked grappler controlled the match, taking a 12-2 major decision, giving Mizzou the early 4-3 dual lead.

Then came the only ranked vs. ranked match of the night between No. 14 redshirt senior Anthony Abro (Canton, Mich.-Canton) against No. 2 J'den Cox.  A couple early takedowns had Abro in the hole going into the second.  Cox racked up riding time in the second and led 9-3 going into the third.  A late takedown from Abro made things 9-5 at the end, but Cox picked up the extra point on riding time, giving him the 10-5 decision.

Redshirt sophomore Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) was next on the mat for EMU looking to get them back into things.  He did his job, notching an early takedown and near fall to jump out to a 6-0 lead.  A reversal in the second had him looking for bonus points against the Mizzou grappler.  He completed the major decision with a second takedown right before the buzzer and riding time gave him the 11-0 win, tying things up at seven.  Hutchison moved to 7-4 in duals on the season.  It was his second major decision shutout this season as well.

Going back to the top, redshirt freshman Armando Torres (Lorain, Ohio-Elyria) would try to give Eastern the lead back against Aaron Assad of Missouri.  No points were scored after one, but Torres notched a takedown in the second after an escape to make things 2-1 heading into the third period.  Torres got another takedown and a couple back points to give him a 6-1 advantage.  Mizzou countered with a takedown of their own to get it back to 6-3 with a minute to go, but he held on for the 6-3 decision to move to 7-2 in duals on the season.  Halfway through the meet, EMU held the 10-7 lead.

Up at 133 lbs. was redshirt sophomore Blake Caudill (Butler, Pa.-Butler) going against true freshman John Erneste, who made his dual debut.  The rookie impressed for the Tigers, taking down Caudill by 13-2 major decision, giving Mizzou the lead back 11-10.

Facing another ranked Tiger wrestler at 141 lbs. was redshirt sophomore Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption), who matched up against No. 10 Matt Manley.  Things started off slow, with neither scoring any points in the first period.  Manley started on bottom in the second, and got the quick escape, as well as a stall call on Springer to get a 2-0 lead.  He followed that with a takedown to take a 4-0 lead into the final period.  Springer notched an escape and takedown in the third, but Manley held on with riding time to take things 5-3, extending the lead 14-10.

At 149 lbs. redshirt junior Nicholas Barber (Cleveland, Ohio- St. Edward) had the toughest challenge of the night, facing undefeated No. 3 ranked Lavion Mayes.  With no scoring after one, Barber started bottom in the second, giving Mayes the opportunity to rack up two minutes of riding time.  With no score in the third, Mayes got the escape to take the 1-0 lead and took the 2-0 win on riding time.  With two matches left, Mizzou held a 17-10 advantage.

The Eagles needed a win at 157 lbs. from redshirt junior Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson) to stay in the dual.  He matched up against unranked Le'Roy Barnes.  An early takedown and escape made things 2-1 in Barnes' favor.  Another takedown made it 4-1 going into the second.  A scoreless second took them to the third where Barnes got a quick six points to make it 10-1, and he completed a 12-1 major decision, sealing the dual win and giving the Tigers a 21-10 lead.

In the final bout of the night, redshirt freshman Dakota Juarez (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) matched with No. 5 Daniel Lewis at 165 lbs.  Lewis notched a quick takedown in the first, making it 2-0 in the second.  An escape and takedown made it 5-0, but Juarez got an escape and takedown of his own, making it 5-3 into the third.  Getting a stall point made it 5-4, but Lewis got a late takedown and riding time to take it 8-4, giving Missouri the 24-10 win.

The Eagles have another dual this weekend when they return home to take on Kent State University.  The dual from the Convocation Center is scheduled for 4 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 17.  The match will be broadcast live on ESPN 3.
