Video Highlights.
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team dropped a heartbreaker dual to Kent State University, 19-14, Sunday Jan. 17, in Mid-American Conference action. The Eagles led almost the whole way before losing the lead in their final two bouts to drop the match.
In total the Green and White (7-5, 2-3 MAC) took four matches on the day, winning four of the first six to lead 14-6, before Kent (10-3, 3-1 MAC) raced back, winning the final four to secure the win. One of the EMU wins came on a technical fall at the heavyweight match while the Flashes notched one major decision.
The bout started at 165 lbs. with redshirt freshman Dakota Juarez (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven). The first period was mostly a stalemate until KSU scored a takedown as time expired making it 2-0 in the second. Juarez racked up almost two minutes of riding time in the second, but KSU voided it in the third to seal a 2-0 decision.
Next was 174 lbs. with redshirt junior Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward) looking to get EMU on the board. He controlled the first period, notching a takedown before scoring a reversal in the second to take a 4-0 lead into the third. Despite a late escape, Davis had 1:15 of riding time to score the 5-1 decision, evening things at three. With the win, Davis moved his record to 9-3 in duals and 4-1 in conference.
At 184 lbs. redshirt freshman Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven-Brownstown) matched up with redshirt senior Cole Baxter of Kent State, who came into the match sporting an 18-8 record. Hillman secured two early takedowns to lead 4-1 in the opening minutes. Two more takedowns in the second had Hillman ahead 8-3 heading into the third. Kent closed the gap with a takedown in the final frame, but Hillman escaped to make it 9-5. Another take down and escape made it 10-7 with 30 seconds in the period. Hillman held on however, withstanding shot after shot by his KSU opponent, ultimately taking the decision and making the team score 6-3. Hillman moved his dual record to 8-4 on the season.
Nationally ranked No. 14 redshirt senior Anthony Abro (Canton, Mich.-Canton) stepped up next looking to extend the lead. Despite a couple takedowns, he eventually fell by 10-7 decision, tying the dual at six apiece.
The heavyweight dual pitted redshirt sophomore Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich-Buchanan) against 24-10 Devin Nye. The EMU 285 pounder dominated the match, using three near falls and two takedowns to get the 16-0 technical fall victory in 3:53, his second of the season. The victory marked Hutchison's third straight conference dual win moved his dual record to 8-4. Halfway through the meet, EMU led 11-6.
Going back to the top, redshirt freshman Armando Torres (Lorain, Ohio-Elyria) matched up with redshirt senior Del Vinas of KSU. A first period stalemate took things to the second where a KSU escape made it 1-0 in the third. Torres started bottom and escaped himself, going 1-1 down the stretch. Both wrestlers nearly got takedowns near the end, but the match went to overtime with a 1-1 score. In overtime Torres got a locked hands point and an escape to lead 3-1. A late two back points secured the 5-1 overtime win, extending the Eagle lead to 14-6. Torres moved his dual record to 8-2 on the season.
At 133 lbs. redshirt sophomore Blake Caudill (Butler, Pa.-Butler) faced No. 10 ranked Mack McGuire. Two first period takedowns put Caudill in the 4-0 hole into the second. McGuire got an escape and another takedown in the second to trail 7-0 into the third. Starting on bottom, Caudill got an escape, but KSU countered with one of his own to make it 9-2, and riding time secured the 10-2 major decision, putting the score at 14-10.
Redshirt sophomore Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption) stepped up next at 141 lbs. Both wrestlers stalemated the first despite a near takedown from Springer. An escape followed by a grudge match put the score at 1-0 headed into the third. Springer got the escape point back and the duo wrestled 1-1 with 1:30 to go. A KSU takedown at the 50 second mark made it 3-1, and despite a late escape from Springer, he was felled 3-2, making it a one point dual, 14-13, going into the penultimate bout.
In the 149 lbs. bout, a rematch from last season found redshirt junior Nicholas Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) going up against Mike DePalma. Both notched takedowns and escapes in the first period to send it to the second 3-3. It went to 5-4 in favor of Barber when after an escape; he got another takedown, all while moving his riding time to over two minutes. Things changed in the third however when DePalma worked the score to 10-6 on a near fall, and got the 10-7 decision to make the score 16-14 in favor of the Golden Flashes in the final match.
In that final match, redshirt senior Michael Shaw (Allegan, Mich-Allegan) wrestled up two weight classes to face No. 2 Ian Miller. The veteran couldn't give the Eagles the win they needed, as Miller took a 9-2 decision, securing the 19-14 win.
The Eagles now have an extended hiatus in dual action, not hitting the mats again until Saturday, Jan. 30 when they host Senior Day against Northern Illinois. The dual from the Convocation Center is set to begin at 4 p.m. and is part of the "Beauty and the Beast" meet with the gymnastics team, which will compete at the same time.
