YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's tennis team opened the home portion of the 2016 spring season Friday, Jan. 22, when it welcomed Oakland University to the Chippewa Club for an afternoon affair. The Eagles (1-2) defeated the Golden Grizzlies (1-1), 5-2, in the home opener.

The afternoon began with doubles play at the Chippewa Club, as the Green and White quickly grabbed the first point of the match. The No. 2 doubles squad of Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) and Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) first made quick work of OU's Karine Celis and Juliana Guevara, 6-3, before Renu Sharma (Fardabad, India) and Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) sealed the point at No. 3 with a 6-2 victory over Sofia Borcuti and Daria Artamonova. The No. 1 singles duo of Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic-Sportovni Gymnazium Klandno) remained undefeated on the dual season, picking up a 6-3 win over Tamara Blum and Elizabeth Guy.

Heading into singles play, the Eagles picked up a few quick points as Martinovska quickly dispatched of Artamonova, 6-3, 6-1, in the No. 3 singles spot before Supejova came behind from a three-game deficit in the first set to defeat Blum in two sets, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1. With the victory, Supejova kept a perfect individual record, moving to 3-0 on the season. Veleva was able to complete the victory for EMU by defeating Sofia Borcuti in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2, in the fifth position.

Oakland grabbed its first point of the match when Guy was able to take Mayerova to a third set tiebreaker. Guy took the tiebreak 10-5 to snatch the Golden Grizzlies' first point. Despite winning the first set, Sharma dropped a three set match, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, to Guevara in the No. 6 spot, giving the OU its second point of the day. After falling in her first set, 4-6, at No. 4, Gogvadze forced a third set tiebreaker with Celis after a 7-6 second set. In the tiebreak, Gogvadze and Celis kept it tied through the majority of the final frame, but with it deadlocked at 9-9, Gogvadze took the final two points of the match to knock off Celis, 11-9, in the final set.

"It's good to get the first win," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "Oakland is getting better every year, but there is no question that we need to play with a lot more confident attitude moving forward. We got into a hole early in a lot of our singles matches. And we were able to change attitudes to come back and muster them. We just need to get better at this at all times."

The Eagles continue the spring season Friday, Jan. 29, when they travel to Lincoln, Neb. to square off with their third Big Ten Conference opponent of the year in the University of Nebraska. EMU will take on the Cornhuskers at 3 p.m. CT Friday afternoon.
