AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Hitting the road for the third time in Mid-American Conference play, the Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team was turned away, dropping a 92-88 decision at the University of Akron Tuesday night, Jan. 19, at James A. Rhodes Arena. The Eagles (10-8, 2-3 MAC) saw the Zips (14-4, 3-2 MAC) shoot a scorching percentage from beyond the arc as they were handed their second straight loss.
Willie Mangum IV (Richmond, Va.-Marshall (San Jacinto College)) led the Green and White in scoring, connecting on 8-of-12 shots, including three triples for 22 points, while four other Eagles cracked double-digits. Ty Toney (Alpharetta, Ga.-Alpharetta (Georgia Highlands)) poured in 16 on 6-of-12 shooting, while Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College) added 13, Raven Lee (Detroit, Mich.-Romulus) posted 11 and Brandon Nazione (Howell, Mich.-Howell) notched 10. James Thompson IV (Baton Rouge, La.-Parkview Baptist) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Eastern Michigan shot 51.7 percent (30-of-58), while shooting at a 52.9 percent (9-of-17) mark from beyond the arc.
For the Zips, Reggie McAdams was the game's high scorer with 28 points on 8-of-14 shooting, connecting on seven long balls. In addition, Isaiah Johnson went for 22 points and a team-best eight rebounds, knocking down 12-of-13 free throws. As a team, the Zips shot 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the floor while hitting 50 percent (13-of-26) three pointers on the night.
The game opened up with back-to-back misses on trips down the floor by both squads in the first half. Toney was the first to break into the scoring column converting on an old fashioned three point play after finishing through a Kwan Cheatham, Jr. foul. Akron didn't stay silent, scoring three points on free throws by Reggie McAdams in the ensuing possession after Jodan Price (Indianapolis, Ind.-Detroit Country Day (DePaul)) fouled the Akron wing.
The Zips' Pat Forsythe gave UA its first lead of the game on an alley oop dunk with just over 17 minutes left in the half, but Thompson followed suit throwing down a thunderous dunk on the other end. The two squads traded buckets over the next few possessions until a Noah Robotham triple began an 8-2 run for Akron, giving UA its biggest lead of the half, 16-11.
Driving the lane, was Lee with just over 10 minutes in the half, he dished to the top of the key and found Nazione for a three ball, just his second of the season. The Howell, Mich. native's triple sparked an 11-0 Eastern Michigan run, putting the Green and White on top by eight, 24-16.
The Zips didn't go away though with five straight points, as McAdams capped off the run with a three pointer. Through the final four minutes of play, both squads traded buckets until Jake Kretzer connected on a wide open triple from the dead spot for Akron to make it a three point, 37-34, game in favor of the Eagles with just 25 seconds left in the game. Lee took the ball the length of the floor in the final possession of the half dropping a three from five feet beyond the arc, giving EMU a six point, 40-34, lead at the break.
Mangum led the EMU offense with eight points in the opening stanza, while both Nazione and Toney poured in seven, apiece. Bond and Lee each grabbed six in the first half. Thompson led the Green and White in rebounding with five boards, while Nazione grabbed four of his own. The Eagles connected on 53.6 percent (15-of-28) of their shots in the first 20 minutes, while knocking down 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from the three point line. In addition, EMU was 5-of-6 (83.3 percent) from the free throw line.
Akron came out of the half scorching from downtown as McAdams led the Zips on a quick 9-2 run with three triples to take the lead, 43-42, with 18:24 left in the game. Both squads started to trade buckets back and forth until the Zips hit their stride with a 7-0 run, taking a seven point, 59-52, lead at the 12:21 mark.
With 9:23 left in the game, the Green and White saw their biggest deficit to that point, 65-57, but the Eagles didn't go away quietly. A 14-5 run capped by a pair of scores from Mangum put Eastern back on top, 71-70. The EMU lead was brief as Antino Jackson hit a three ball on the next possession to put the Zips back on top.
Akron held the lead the remainder of the game, jumping on top by as many as nine, 85-76, following McAdams' final three pointer of the game. Despite coming close to the Zips, Akron was able to make free throws down the stretch and hold on to a seven point advantage with two seconds left. As time expired, Toney connected on a long three to leave the final at 92-88.
The Eagles return home as the first leg of a doubleheader at the Convocation Center this Saturday, Jan. 23. Eastern Michigan will square off with MAC West foe Ball State University at 11:30 a.m.
