YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Throughout the year, one member of the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team will post a journal entry about what has been going on recently with the team, both inside and outside the gym. This week, Lacey Rubin discusses the team's season opening meet in Pittsburgh.
Hello Eagle Fans,
Two weeks ago, the Eagles came back from Christmas break, which meant season was just around the corner! To start off the weekend, we had a team bonding dinner at Bravo! After that, we went bowling, which was a great way to start the weekend.
This past weekend was exciting for the team, as we took our first road trip down to Pittsburgh, Pa. to compete in our first quad meet of the season. We started our 2016 season off strong, and took home three wins! We went into the meet feeling confident and the Eagles started off strong on beam where we hit 7 for 7, seeing career high scores from sophomores Catie Conrad and Kendall Valentin. Moving onto floor, we saw a few new faces and had a couple low scores but saw a nice set from returning sophomore Rachel Slocum scoring 9.75!
Vault had a nice comeback, hitting once again 7 for 7 and seeing really nice fulls from everyone in the rotation, especially anchor Kendall Valentin with a stick and career high 9.875! This vault lineup put us eighth in the nation! Although we didn't end the meet how we wanted to on bars, there were a few really good routines in the bunch. This meet put us 20th in the nation all around and 14th in the nation on beam! It was the best feeling knowing that these rankings were the best in program history! We can't wait to get back out on the floor on Sunday as we head to Kalamazoo to take on the Western Michigan Broncos and Bowling Green Falcons!
