Eagles Spurned by Set Piece Goal in 1-0 Loss to Miami

9/27/2015 4:55:00 PM | Soccer

The defeat marks the first time the Eagles have lost at home this season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team continued Mid-American Conference play Sunday, Sept. 27, playing host to Miami University (6-3-0; 2-0-0 MAC). Unable to muster any offensive production, the Eagles (3-6-1; 0-2-0 MAC) were clipped 1-0 at Scicluna Field. Freshman Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) made four saves in the loss.

Closing out the opening weekend of MAC play against preseason favorite Miami, the Eagles' aggressive game plan was evident early. EMU pressed forward from the start, in hopes of serving up an early goal.

Junior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) and redshirt junior Jennifer Bentley (London, Ontario-London) served up crosses for the Eagles in the third and seventh minutes respectively, but the Miami keeper broke through traffic to punch them away.

Moments later, senior Megan Trapp (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) ripped a shot from the top of the 18. A laser off the boot of Trapp was bobbled by Miami's Vic Maniaci but junior Madison Hirsch's (Troy, Mich.-Troy) follow-up attempt was corralled.

Keeping the pressure on the RedHawks' defense, the Eagles worked for the first corner of the game. Trotting to the flag in hopes of collecting her fifth assist of the season, Washburn delivered a low soaring cross to redshirt freshman Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) at the front post. Fighting through traffic, Nason sent a header towards goal, narrowly missing the back of the net as the ball bounced off the crossbar.

Maintaining control for 44 of 45 minutes in the first frame, the Redhawks garnered a corner with less than 25 seconds left in the half. Jess Bronke delivered a cross into the box, connecting with Katie Alexander. Heading the ball far post, Alexander's goal lifted Miami to a 1-0 lead with 3 seconds to play before halftime.

The composure, patience, and creativity the Eagles displayed in the first 44 minutes of the match were absent in the second half. Firing off four shots in the second half, EMU spent a majority of the final 45 minutes in their defensive zone making it nearly impossible to find the equalizer offensively.

Despite holding advantages in shots (13-9) and corners (7-1) the Eagles' offense came up empty as a set-piece goal downed the Eagles for the second straight game.  The 1-nil loss marks the fourth time the Eagles have been shutout this season.

The Green and White continue their three-game home stand Friday, Oct. 2, at Scicluna Field when University ar Buffalo travels to Ypsilanti. The MAC match is set to start at 4 p.m.
