Freshman Kaylin Williams made five saves in the Eagles' loss

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Unable to capitalize on early opportunities, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team dropped a Mid-American Conference match to the University of Buffalo (6-4-1; 2-1-0 MAC), Friday, Oct. 2, at Scicluna Field. Freshman goalkeeper Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) tallied five saves as the Eagles (3-7-1; 0-3-0 MAC) fell, 1-0, to the Bulls.

Through the first 20 minutes of play, the Eagles mustered four corners and four shots but could not put a shot past Buffalo's Laura Dougall.

With the Eagles possessing the ball for a majority of the first half, Buffalo's best opportunity came in the 31st minute. Julia Benati collected a cross behind the Eagles' backline and dribbled towards goal before ripping a shot from 8-yards out. One-on-one with Benati, Williams held her line and denied the shot from close range to keep the match scoreless.

Buffalo came out pressing in the second half, leading to an early opportunity for the Bulls in the 48th minute. The Bulls earned their first corner of the game and delivered the service to the far post but a quick jump by Williams and great marking by the EMU defense preserved the scoreless tie.

On the counter, senior Chelsie Oddan's (Calgary, Alberta-Central Memorial) shot was blocked but freshman Mikayla Cupp (Ostego, Mich.-Ostego) corralled the rebound at the top of the 18. Taking one touch, Cupp moved towards goal and sent a shot through traffic but Dougall came up with save.

Moving the ball through the midfield moments later, Buffalo attacked the Eagles with numbers. With Williams closing down on her, Buffalo's Carissima Cutrona slipped a cross through the box just out of the reach of the Eagles' keeper. Delivering her cross to the far post, Cutrona connected with Benati who buried the one-timer to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead in the 66th minute.

While the Eagles created opportunity after opportunity in the first half, scoring chances were few and far between following Benati's go-ahead goal. Senior Hallee Kansman (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington) and redshirt freshman Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) sent shots high and wide of goal, but the Eagles came up empty down the stretch, eventually falling 1-nil.

The Eagles return to the pitch, Sunday, Oct. 4 against Akron University with hopes of turning the tide on their start to league play. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. at Scicluna Field.
