YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind a strong performance from the pitching staff, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team defeated Bowling Green State University by a final score of 4-1 Wednesday night, April 8, in a non-conference game at Oestrike Stadium. The Eagles (13-19) held the Falcons (9-18) to just three hits in the contest and used a three-run sixth inning to take the rare non-conference victory over Bowling Green.
Kyle Huckaby was solid in his fourth start of his freshman campaign. Huckaby (3-1) picked up the victory after tossing 6.1 innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits. Matthew Beaton pitched the final 2.1 innings, not allowing a hit and struck out three to record his first career save.
EMU scored four runs on five hits, led by Adam Dennison's 3-for-3 night. Dennison drove in a run as well and extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games. Jordan Peterson and John Montgomery each recorded a hit and RBI for the Green and White.
BGSU benefited from an error, a walk, and three stolen bases in the first inning to put the first run of the game on the board. Matt Smith's sacrifice fly plated Brandon Howard to give the Falcons the early 1-0 lead.
The Eagles cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the third to knot the score at 1-1. Peterson drove in Austin Wilson with an RBI groundout to shortstop. Wilson led off the frame with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then to third via his sixth stolen base of the season.
Huckaby did not allow a hit until Smith lined one into centerfield just past the diving attempt of Wilson with two outs in the top of the sixth. The ball got by Wilson as Smith was able to move all the way to third for a triple. Huckaby stranded Smith, however, getting Greg Basalyga to pop out to shortstop to end the inning and keep the game tied. The freshman had retired nine consecutive batters before allowing the hit.
The Green and White took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth, using three singles and a pair of walks. Peterson came around to score on the second wild pitch of the inning for the first run after singling with one out. Montgomery then drove in John Rubino with a base knock through the right side. Dennison kept the rally alive with a looping single into left field to bring in Mitchell McGeein to give the Eagles the three-run advantage.
Huckaby and Beaton combined to hold the Falcons hitless in the final three innings to preserve the three-run victory.
Eastern Michigan returns to Mid-American Conference action this weekend as the Eagles travel to Mount Pleasant for a three-game set against Central Michigan University. The series gets underway Friday, April 10, with first pitch scheduled for 3:05 p.m. at Theunissen Stadium.
