Three Home Runs Not Enough in Series Opening Loss at CMU

4/10/2015 6:42:00 PM | Baseball

Jackson Martin, Mitchell McGeein, and Austin Wilson each homered in Friday’s game

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a 16-6 decision to Central Michigan University in the first of a three-game Mid-American Conference series Friday, April 10, at Theunissen Stadium.  The Chippewas (22-12, 8-2 MAC) scored in six different innings en route to claiming victory over the Eagles (13-20, 4-6 MAC).

The Eagles scored six runs on 15 hits in the contest, including three long balls.  Jackson Martin, Austin Wilson, and Mitchell McGeein each homered for the Green and White, which marks the second time this season EMU has recorded three home runs as the Eagles also did it against Santa Clara in the nightcap of a doubleheader, March 1.  For Martin and Wilson, it was their first career round trippers.  Michael Mioduszewski (2-for-4), John Montgomery (2-for-3), Martin (2-for-4), Wilson (2-for-4), and McGeein (3-for-5) each recorded multiple hits in the series opener for Eastern.

Central Michigan scored a season-high 16 runs on 18 hits, which marks the third straight-game the Chippewas have scored at least 12 runs.  Pat MacKenzie paced the CMU offense with four hits and four runs scored.  Daniel Jipping drove in a team-high four runs, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate.

Senior Charlie Land was saddled with the loss after giving up 10 runs (six earned) on 10 hits in just 4.0+ innings.  Land (2-5) struck out five batters, which makes it three-straight appearances that the senior has struck out at least five.  Devon Bronson relieved Land, tossing a scoreless two innings for the Eagles.  Wilson and Chase Flanery also made appearances on the mound for Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde.  Nick Deeg (6-2) was credited with the victory after pitching seven strong innings, allowing just one run on eight hits.

The Chippewas got out to a quick start over the Green and White in the opening game of the series.  CMU plated one run in the first inning on a Logan Regnier triple and then scored six more on five hits and one Eagle error in the bottom of the second to take a 7-0 lead.

Central's offense continued to roll, as Jipping doubled home a pair of runs in the fourth inning and Zack Field's first homer of the year in the fifth extend the home team's lead to 10-0.

The Eagles got on the board in the top of the seventh inning as Martin led off the frame belting his first-career home run over the left field wall to make it a 10-1 game.

CMU responded in the bottom half of the seventh, however, scoring five more runs on five hits to push its lead out to 15-1.

Wilson's first career home run came in the top of the eighth with three runners on base.  The junior ripped a 1-0 pitch over the left field fence to bring in Martin and Mioduszewski who each singled earlier in the frame.

Following another Chippewa run in the eighth, EMU put two more on the board in the top of the ninth.  McGeein led off the inning with his league-best ninth home run of the season while Montgomery's RBI single to center field brought in Tony DiLeo for the final run of the contest.  Martin singled in the following at-bat, but Luke DeVenney was thrown out at home as CMU closed out the 16-6 victory.

The Eagles look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon, April 11, as they will try to even the series.  First pitch scheduled for 2:05 p.m. at Theunissen Stadium.
