Six different Eagles recorded a base hit in the contest Saturday afternoon
The Green and White had six different players record a hit in the contest. Luke DeVenney, John Rubino, Mitchell McGeein, John Montgomery, Michael Mioduszewski, and Jordan Peterson all reached base via a base knock. Rubino, McGeein, and Montgomery drove in the three runs for the Eagles. Logan Regnier and Joe Houlihan combined to drive in 10 runs, while leadoff hitter Alex Borglin finished with a team-high four hits and five runs scored for the Chippewas.
Jake Andrews (2-3) took the loss on the hill for the Eagles, allowing 11 runs (10 earned) on 10 hits in just 2.0+ innings of work. Brent Mattson and Michael Marsinek each appeared in relief out of the bullpen for Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde. Sean Renzi (1-1) pitched six innings, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out six while recording the victory for CMU.
The Eagles jumped on the board early, as Peterson scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of McGeein to give the Green and White a 1-0 lead. Following a pair of walks to Peterson and Rubino to begin the game, the duo moved up 90-feet on stolen bases to put themselves into scoring position for EMU's leading run producer.
CMU responded, however, in the bottom of the first, plating three runs on three hits and two walks to grab a 3-1 advantage.
The Chippewas continued to swing hot bats, tacking on seven more runs on six hits in the second inning to take a 10-1 lead over the Eagles. Zack Fields capped the big inning for Central with his second home run of the weekend, a two-run shot over the left center field wall.
After retiring the Green and White in the third inning, CMU's offense continued to click. The home squad put up four runs on three hits, including a three-run blast from Joe Houlihan. The four-run frame made it the fourth consecutive game that the Chips have scored at least 12 runs.
The Eagles added another run in the fifth inning to make the score 14-2. Rubino's RBI groundout scored Jackson Martin who reached base after being hit by a pitch to leadoff the frame.
CMU plated two more runs in the seventh and eighth innings to extend its lead to 18-1 heading into the final inning.
Back-to-back doubles off the bat of McGeein and Montgomery gave the Eagles another run in the ninth inning, but one is all they could get as the Chippewas closed out the 18-3 victory.
The two teams conclude the three-game Mid-American Conference series tomorrow afternoon, April 12, with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. at Theunissen Stadium.
