Eagles Drop 3-1 Decision at Central Michigan

The Chippewas swept EMU in the weekend MAC series

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a third-straight game to Central Michigan University by a final score of 3-1 in the series finale of the Mid-American Conference series at Theunissen Stadium Sunday afternoon, April 12.  The Eagles fall to 13-22 overall and 4-8 in conference play while the victory improves CMU to 24-12 overall and 10-2 in MAC play.

The Eagles finished with eight hits, led by Michael Mioduszewski who finished 3-for-3 with one RBI.  David Lett was the only other Eagle to finish with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 at the plate.  John Rubino, Jordan Peterson, and Tony DiLeo also reached base via a base knock for the Green and White.  Peterson scored the lone run for EMU.  Central was led offensively by Zach McKinstry who went a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish.

Senior Ryan Lavoie was saddled with the loss after making his first start since March 20 against Akron.  Lavoie (1-4) gave up two runs on four hits in 2.1 innings pitched while striking out four.  Augie Gallardo, Matthew Beaton, and Sam Delaplane combined to pitch the remainder of the contest, allowing just one unearned run.  Sean Martens (5-0) picked up the victory in relief for Central, pitching a scoreless 1.2 innings out of the bullpen.

The Chippewas grabbed a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the third inning.  An RBI triple off the bat of Logan Regnier put the first run on the board, while Regnier came around to score on a wild pitch in the ensuing at-bat to give CMU the two-run lead.

EMU cut into its two-run deficit in the top of the fourth, plating one run on an RBI single from Mioduszewski.  Mioduszewski drove in Peterson who walked and stole second base to put himself into scoring position.

CMU tacked-on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, benefiting from a pair of Eagles defensive miscues.

The Green and White went quietly in the top of the ninth as the Chips were able to hold on for the 3-1 victory and series sweep.

Eastern Michigan returns to the diamond Tuesday, April 14, when the Eagles travel to Bowling Green, Ohio for a non-conference matchup with the Falcons.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. at Seller Field.
