BGSU scored three runs in the eighth inning to split the season series with the Eagles
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Despite grabbing a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision at Bowling Green State University Tuesday afternoon, April 14, in non-conference action at Steller Field. The Falcons (12-19) scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to split the season series with the Eagles (13-23).
The Eagles collected six hits in the contest, led by Jordan Peterson who finished 2-for-5 with one double and a run scored. John Rubino, Mitchell McGeein, Michael Mioduszewski, and David Lett also recorded a hit for the Green and White. Rubino scored a run as well while Mioduszewski finished with one RBI. Randy Righter led the Falcons offensively, finishing 2-for-4 including the game-winning two-run home run in the eighth inning.
Junior Austin Wilson (0-1) was saddled with the loss in relief after giving up three runs on three hits in three innings pitched. Freshman Adam Hornstra was solid in his third start of the season, allowing just one run on three hits in five innings. Devin Daugherty (3-1) picked up the victory out of the bullpen while Kody Brown collected his second save of the season for the Falcons.
BGSU cracked the scoreboard in the bottom of the second, taking a 1-0 lead. Tyler Greiner's two-out RBI single up the middle scored Matt Smith for the first run of the game.
After being held scoreless for the first seven innings, the Green and White grabbed its first lead of the game in the top of the eighth. The Eagles benefitted from a bases loaded error from the Falcon third baseman to score Peterson and Rubino to put Eastern up 2-1. Mioduszewski was credited with one RBI on the play.
The Falcons responded in the bottom half of the eighth inning, however, scoring three runs on three hits to take a 4-2 lead. Greg Basalyga's two-out pinch hit RBI single knotted the score at two, while Randy Righter's two-run homer over the left centerfield wall put the home team up by two heading into the final inning.
EMU went 1-2-3 in the ninth inning as the Falcons were able to hold on for the two-run victory, 4-2.
Eastern Michigan returns to action tomorrow afternoon, April 15, as the Eagles make the short trip to Ann Arbor for a matchup with the University of Michigan at 4 p.m. The Green and White will be looking to avenge a loss to the Wolverines last week, April 7.
