Big Innings Lead Michigan Past Eagles

4/7/2015 7:12:00 PM | Baseball

The Wolverines defeated EMU on the diamond for the first time since the 2011 season

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped an 18-4 contest to the University of Michigan Tuesday, April 7, in a non-conference matchup at the Wilpon Complex.  The Wolverines scored multiple runs in five different innings to snap a seven-game losing streak to EMU.

The Eagles (12-19) scored four runs on six hits in the contest.  Austin Wilson, John Rubino, Tony DiLeo, Michael Mioduszewski, and Adam Dennison each reached base via a base-knock.  DiLeo was lone the Eagle to record multiple hits in the game, finishing 2-for-4 at the dish.  Dennison drove in two runs while Wilson recorded the other RBI for the Green and White.  The Wolverines (19-13) were paced offensively by Cody Bruder and Johnny Slater who had career days at the plate.  Bruder was 5-for-6 with five RBI and two triples while Johnny Slater was 3-for-3 with six runs batted in and two home runs.

Freshman Adam Hornstra was saddled with the loss in his second collegiate start on the bump.  Hornstra (0-2) gave up six runs on six hits in three innings pitched.  Freshman walk-on Chase Flanery made his collegiate debut on the hill, pitching the seventh and eighth innings for the Eagles.  Jayce Vancena (2-1) was credited with the victory for the Wolverines after pitching four innings of relief.

Michigan raced out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, taking advantage of three hits and benefitting from a pair of walks and a hit batter.  Hornstra stranded the bases loaded, however, getting a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Eastern responded with a successful suicide squeeze off the bat of Dennison to score DiLeo in the top of the second to cut the deficit down to two, 3-1. DiLeo led off the inning with his fourth double of the season down the left field line.

The Wolverines extended their lead out to five runs, 6-1, with another three-run frame in the bottom of the second inning.

The Eagles cut into the Wolverines lead once again in the top of the fourth, scoring a pair of runs to make the score 6-3.  Dennison drove in Jordan Peterson for the first run of the inning on an infield single before taking advantage of a throwing error from the third baseman to score Mioduszewski.

A Jackson Glines homer over the right center field wall and RBI single from Bruder in the fourth inning put two more runs on the board for the Maize and Blue to make the score 8-3.

EMU manufactured a run with two outs in the top of the sixth to make it a four-run game, 8-4.  A Jackson Martin walk and David Lett hit by pitch with two down put a pair runners on for Wilson who ripped a sharp single up the middle to score Martin.

U-M's offense continued to click, putting 10 more runs on the board in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to take an 18-4 lead.  Matt Odgen kept the Eagles off the board in the final three innings to preserve his first save of the season and victory for the Wolverines.

Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde and his club look to get back in the win column tomorrow evening, April 8, when the Eagles host Bowling Green State University.  First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium.  Fans who cannot attend the game can listen live on the airwaves of Eagles All-Access free of charge.
