LEBANON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – For the seventh time in program history, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team posted a runner-up showing at the Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championship Sunday, April 26, on the par-72, 6,191-yard Shaker Run Golf Club course. The Eagles carded a three-day total of 928 (315-307-306) as Kent State claimed the championship with a 54-hole total of 918 (304-307-309).
The Eagles challenged the Golden Flashes all day long, as the Green and White posted the lowest-round of any squad at 306. On the front nine, Kent State saw the advantage shrink to just three before rebounding to shoot a final round 309. The 10-stroke differential was the smallest in the 17-year history of the championship, bettering the previous low of 12 between KSU and EMU in 2011.
EMU's second-place finish equaled the mark set by the 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011 and the 2013 squads. In 2003, the Green and White recorded a 925 at Walden Ponds Golf Course in Hamilton, Ohio. The 2007 team posted a 1,252 at Longaberger Golf Club, while the 2008 Eagles finished as the runner-up with 1,228 at The Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in Indianapolis, Ind. The 2009 squad totaled a 1,256 while the 2011 team notched a 928 in Nashport, Ohio. More recently, the 2013 club carded a 937 to tie Toledo back at Longaberger Golf Club.
The Eagles' seven runner-up finishes at the MAC Championship are the most of any team in the league. Ohio (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005), Toledo (2006, 2013, 2014), Ball State (2010, 2012) and Western Michigan (2004) are the only other teams to record a second-place finish in the history of the tournament.
Kent State made history at the tournament, as the Golden Flashes captured their 17th-straight league championship. The mark tied the EMU's men's swimming and diving team (1980-96) for the longest consecutive championship streak in MAC history.
EMU sophomore Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) finished in third-place with a 228 (79-78-71) to earn all-tournament team accolades while freshman Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) tied for ninth with a 234 (83-76-75). Murphy's showing was the best by an Eagle since Sarah Johnson won the 2011 MAC title with a three-day total of 216 (72-73-71).
Kent State's Josee Doyon claimed medalist honors with a six-over par total of 222 (74-74-74). Doyon was followed by Bowling Green's Patricia Holt at 227 (77-75-75) to mark the 14th time in the history of the event a KSU player had won the individual title.
Conditions were near perfect as players enjoyed temperatures in the high-50s and light winds. Toledo finished tied for third with a 939, as Ohio (944), Northern Illinois (946), Western Michigan (950), Bowling Green (956), Akron (970), Ball State (986) and Central Michigan (1,039) rounded out the team scores.
For the tournament, all five Eagles ranked in the top 20. Redshirt-junior Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) and freshman Kylie Raines (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman) finished 16th with a 236 while redshirt-senior Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) rounded out the lineup with a 237 (77-78-82) to sit in a tie for 19th-place.
Head Coach Sandy Wagner and the rest of the Eagles will now await word from the NCAA on a possible at large berth into the upcoming NCAA Regional Championships, May 7-9. The possible sites include Raleigh, N.C. (North Carolina State), San Antonio, Texas (UTSA), South Bend, Ind. (Notre Dame) and St. George, Utah (BYU).
