HILLSDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team sent a select group of athletes to compete on the first two days of the Hillsdale Gina Relays, April 23-24.
The first day of action saw two harriers compete for the Green and White. In the 5000m, Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio-Defiance) set a personal record to finish 14th overall, breaking the 15-minute barrier for the first time in his career and clocking in at 14:56.94. In the open section of the 3000m steeplechase, Caleb Hess (Owosso, Mich.-Owosso) placed fifth in 10:14.22.
Friday saw most of its action on the track, though the three field events contested saw great success. Ryan Brumfield (Chester Springs, Pa.-Owen J Robert) hit a momentous mark in the high jump to tie for first in the event, clearing 2.09 meters/6 feet 10.25-inches and just missing out on EMU's all-time top-10 list by a slim centimeter. Also placing was James O'Shea (Toledo, Ohio-St. Johns Jesuit), who took eighth with a jump of 1.96 meters/6 feet 5-inches.
In the throws, Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill.-Williamsville) finished second just three inches behind Michigan's Brad Bolton in the hammer throw with a toss of 59.29 meters/194 feet 6-inches. Taking sixth was Andrew Wentz (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) just four inches off his season best at 52.06 meters/170 feet 10-inches. Freshman Elijah Albert-Grayer (Canton, Mich.-Salem) continued to improve in the event, setting a collegiate best of 47.52 meters/155 feet 11-inches, good for 11th.
Williams also competed in the shot put, placing sixth at 15.72 meters/51 feet 7-inches, but was paced by Travis Harris (Walled Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) with a throw of 16.82 meters/55 feet 2.25-inches for third and Quinn Levering (Caledonia, Ohio-River Valley)'s mark of 16.02 meters/52 feet 6.75-inches for fifth.
Eastern had three victories on the track, two of which were courtesy of Pedro Delgado (Southfield, Mich.-Brother Rice) in the 100m and 200m. Delgado finished just five-hundredths of a second off his personal best in the 100m, winning in 10.75 seconds while Wayne Blanchard (Toledo, Ohio-St. Francis de Sales) matched his fastest time at 10.95 seconds for fourth and Nick James (Troy, Ohio-Troy) made his outdoor debut in 10.99 seconds for fifth. Lindsey also competed in the 400m hurdles, finishing not far off his personal best in 55.49 seconds for third and trailed Mark Cooke (Edison, N.J.-John P. Stevens) as he set a collegiate best in 54.47 seconds for runner-up.
The Eagles competed in two more events for Friday's slate. In the 800m, Tom Jozwiak (Southgate, Mich.-Thomas J. Anderson) took 17th in the 800m in 1:58.83.
