Eagles Surpass 2014 Win Total With Sweep of Youngstown State

The Eagles used two double-digit hit efforts to secure two victories over the Penguins
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team surpassed its win total from the 2014 season with a sweep over Youngstown State University in a non-conference mid-week contest Wednesday, April 22. The sweep not only surpassed the Eagles' win total from a season ago, but also marked the second sweep in the 2015 season for the Green and White.
EMU (15-25) used 21 hits between the two contests, notching double-digit hits in both games. Eastern was led by freshman Haley Hostetler who went 5-for-7 at the plate with two RBI and scoring twice, while Jenn Lucas went 4-for-5 at the dish with one RBI and two runs for the Green and White. Sophomore Michelle Kriegshauser extended her reached base streak to a team-best 14 games, while extending her hitting streak to eight games, going 3-for-5 at the plate with three RBI on the day. Finally both Lindsay Rich and Taylor Wagner had multi-RBI contest for the Eagles with Rich driving in two runs in game one and Wagner bringing in two runs in game two. In the circle, relief pitchers Alyssa Huntley (3-1) and Abbie Minsker (1-1) captured the wins for Eastern Michigan. The win marked the third of the season for Huntley and the first for Minsker.
For the Penguins, Sarah Dowd tallied back-to-back multi-hit games with five total hits on the afternoon, while Miranda Castiglione drove in four RBI and scored twice for Youngstown State. Alexandria Gibson also had a day at the plate for YSU, going 5-for-9 with three RBI. Kayla Haslett suffered the loss in game one, pitching all six innings, while relief pitcher Ashley Kozial recorded the loss in game two.
Game One: Eastern Michigan 5, Youngstown State 4
Hostetler led the Eagles at the plate in game one, going 3-for-4 with one RBI and scoring twice, while Lucas and Kriegshauser posted two hits apiece for the Green and White. Huntley (3-1) nabbed her third win of the 2015 season, pitching 4.2 innings with two clutch strikeouts in the final inning of the contest.
Dowd and Moffatt had three hits apiece in game one, while Dowd drove in one run. Gibson and Castiglione also brought in one run apiece for the Penguins, while Haslett (3-9) suffered the loss in game one pitching six innings.
Three-straight singles in the top of the first inning gave Youngstown State the early 1-0 lead over Eastern Michigan. A single to the right center field wall brought in a runner at third base to extend the lead to 2-0 with no outs on the scoreboard for the Green and White. A swinging strikeout and a throw out by Wagner on the stealing runner recorded two quick outs for EMU, while an easy pop up to third base etched the final out to close out the top of the first inning with the Penguins leading 2-0.
The Eagles put runners on first and second with two singes before Wagner singled just over the head of the second baseman to bring in EMU's first run of the afternoon. Eastern knotted the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third when Hostetler led off with a home run over the left field fence. The Green and White took its first lead of the game when back-to-back singles put runners on the basepath for Rich who laced a single to right field, bringing in two runs to take the 4-2 lead over the Penguins.
Youngstown State used a leadoff walk followed by a single to center field that skipped over the glove of Lucas to bring in an unearned run before the Eagles used two groundouts to get two outs. A single down the left field line tied the score for the second time in the contest at 4-4 before EMU got the final out it needed in the top of the fourth inning.
Eastern notched its second lead of the contest in the bottom half of the inning two-straight singles and a groundout from Kriegshauser allowed an unearned run to cross the plate for the Green and White.
YSU made it interesting for the Eagles in the top of the seventh, loading the bases before Huntley struck out the final two batters of the inning to earn the 14th win of the 2015 season for the Green and White.
Game Two: Eastern Michigan 12, Youngstown State 10
Rich helped herself in the bottom of the first inning when a single and a walk out runners in scoring position for the senior pitcher who laced a single over the center fielder's head to give EMU the early 1-0 lead. Wagner extended the Eagle lead to 2-0 when a groundout to the shortstop brought in the RBI for the Green and White.
Eastern tacked on three quick runs in the bottom of the second when Olmos walked and pinch runner Angel Schilke made her way to third base on a stolen base and a YSU miscue. Schilke came home on a suicide squeeze when Elaine Whitbeck laid down a small push bunt to the first baseman. EMU tacked on two more runs following the squeeze when Hostetler drove a homer over the left center field wall.
The EMU offense continued to strike when Lucas was hit by a pitch and Kriegshauser followed it up with a line shot over the left center wall to extend the Eagles advantage to 7-0 in the bottom of the second.
The Penguins pushed their first run of the game across the plate in the top of the third inning with the first two batters reaching base before Castiglione singled up the middle to bring in Dowd. Gibson continued the trend, popping a single to left field, loading the bases for YSU with only one out for the Eagles.
Cali Mikovich hit the ball to the opposite side of the diamond, recording an out for the Eagles but not before a run scored, bringing the score to 7-2 in favor of Eastern Michigan.
Katy Wyman led off the third inning with a single to the shortstop and advanced to third on a stolen base and a throwing error by the YSU catcher. With Wyman on third, Davidson hit a slow roller to the shortstop, allowing Wyman to cross the plate, extending the EMU lead to 8-2.
Two singles and an Eagle error loaded the bases for Youngstown State when Castiglione double over the head of Kriegshauser, scoring two runs. Gibson followed up the double with a single, plating two more runs and bringing the Penguins within two of Eastern, 8-6.
With the tying runs on base, Rich pitched herself out of a jam with a groundout to close out the top of the fourth inning.

Youngstown State tacked on its seventh run of the day in the top of the sixth with a single up the middle from Mikovich, plating Castiglione with one out. A hit to the edge of the left field grass loaded the bases for YSU for Minsker, who came on in relif of Rich. A balk proved costly for EMU as all base runners advanced to bring the Penguins within one of EMU in the top of the sixth inning.
With bases juiced for the second time of the inning Macey line a shallow single down the right field line, handing YSU the 10-9 lead over the Green and White. A pop up to Hostetler closed out the four-run Youngstown State inning for the Eagles.
Lucas knotted the score in the bottom half of the six innings when she blasted a leadoff solo homer over the right center field wall. A balk in favor of EMU advanced Kriegshauser, who drew a walk earlier in the inning, to third base, while a third walk in the inning loaded the bases for Davidson. Eastern Michigan closed out the inning with a two-run advantage when YSU's catcher dropped an easy throw at the plate and allowed it to roll to the backstop, plating two runs for the Green and White. A lineout to third turned into a double play for the Penguins but not before Eastern notched the 12-10 advantage heading into the top final inning of the game.
The Green and White recorded the final three outs it needed to earn its second sweep of the 2015 season.
Eastern Michigan will begin a six-game road stint Friday, April 24 when it heads to DeKalb, Ill. for a doubleheader with the Huskies of Northern Illinois University. The Eagles will then travel back to the Great Lakes State where they will go up against Western Michigan in a two game series Saturday, April 25 - Sunday, April 26. The Green and White will conclude its 2015 road regular season road schedule Wednesday, April 29 when it takes on Oakland University in a non-conference contest in Rochester.
