Eagles Out-Hit Notre Dame But Fall On the Road, 6-0

3/31/2015 8:42:00 PM | Baseball

EMU had all nine batters reach base but could not put any runs on the board against Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team out-hit the University of Notre Dame, 10-7, but could not scratch any runs across as the Fighting Irish plated six runs to take the midweek non-conference game Tuesday evening, March 31, by a final score of 6-0.  The victory improves Notre Dame to 17-10 on the season while the Eagles fall to 9-17 overall this year.  Notre Dame has now won 13 consecutive non-conference games.

All nine hitters in the Eastern lineup reached base in the game with eight recording a base knock.  The Eagles were led by two-hit performances by Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) and Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.).  Notre Dame was paced offensively by Robert Youngdahl who was 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and three runs scored.  Zak Kutsulis was the only other player to record a pair of hits for the Irish.

Freshman Adam Hornstra (Atlanta, Ga.-Riverwood) made his collegiate debut for the Green and White against the Fighting Irish Tuesday night.  Hornstra (0-1) took the loss, pitching three innings allowing four runs on five hits while striking out one.  Freshman Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich-Canton) pitched the final five innings for the Eagles, allowing two runs on two hits with a pair of strikeouts.  Ryan Smoyer tossed a complete game for the Irish, allowing 10 hits while striking out five.

The Fighting Irish jumped on the board in the bottom of the second inning to grab a 1-0 advantage over the Eagles.  Youngdahl came around to score on Ryan Lidge's RBI single after leading off the frame with a single and stolen base to give ND the early lead.

Notre Dame extended its lead out to 4-0 in the fourth inning.  The first five batters reached base off Hornstra causing Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde to hit the bullpen.  Back-to-back singles after a leadoff hit by pitch and walk gave the Irish their second run of the game.  A bases loaded walk ended the first career start for Hornstra which is when Mattson checked in for the Eagles.  After a sacrifice fly made it a four-run contest, Mattson worked out of the inning not allowing another run to score.

UND tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning on an RBI double from Youngdahl and a run scoring triple off the bat from Kutsulis made it a 6-0 game.

Eastern Michigan returns home to face Michigan State University tomorrow night, April 1, at Oestrike Stadium.  First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. against the Spartans (12-13).
