Bats Come Alive In 10-5 Victory Over Spartans

4/1/2015 9:27:00 PM | Baseball

The Eagles recorded their first victory over MSU since the 2012 season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team welcomed Michigan State University to Oestrike Stadium Wednesday evening, April 1, for a non-conference matchup.  The Eagles (10-17) racked up 13 hits en route to a 10-5 victory over the Spartans (12-14).  The win was the first over the Spartans since the 2012 season when the Green and White posted a 13-5 victory in East Lansing, April 11, as well as the first by Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde over his first team.

EMU was led offensively by John Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon) who went 4-for-5 at the plate with a pair of runs scored.  Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) had a solid day at the dish as well, recording three hits and one RBI.  Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) and Tony DiLeo (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) each went 2-for-4 with one run scored and one run driven in for the Green and White.  Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) recorded a team-high two RBI for the Eagles.

Freshman Kyle Huckaby (Chandler, Ariz.-Perry) recorded his first collegiate victory in the game after making the start on the hill.  Huckaby (1-1) pitched three innings, allowing five hits and two unearned runs.  Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif-Leigh) pitched a perfect final 1.2 innings while racking up three strikeouts on the way.

The Spartans jumped on the board early, taking advantage of a throwing error.  Ryan Krill came around to score on the error after reaching base on a one-out single to give MSU the early 1-0 lead.

A leadoff walk to Wilson and back-to-back singles from Rubino and Peterson loaded the bases with no outs but the Green and White could not push any runs across keeping it a one-run game heading to the second inning.

MSU benefited from another two-out error to keep the second inning going.  Cam Gibson's RBI single up the middle scored Kory Young after he reached on a throwing error to make the score 2-0 in the Spartans favor.

Four consecutive two-out base hits from the Eagles in the bottom of the second scored four runs to give the home team a 4-2 advantage.  Wilson's shallow double into center field got things going, scoring Martin for the first run.  Following an infield single from Rubino, Peterson singled into left field to score Wilson for the second run of the inning.  In the ensuing at-bat, McGeein ripped a double deep into the left center field gap to score Rubino and Peterson.

The third error in the first four innings, this time on a failed pickoff attempt advanced Young into scoring position.  Third baseman Mark Weist delivered with a single into right field to score Young and cut into the Eagles' lead making it 4-3 in the fourth inning.

The Green and White got the run back in the bottom half of the fourth to take another two-run advantage, 5-3.  A two-out double from Rubino and infield single from McGeein put runners on first and third.  During the next at-bat, McGeein got caught in a rundown on a pickoff attempt allowing Rubino to touch home on the play.

EMU added on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-3 lead over the Spartans.  Three straight batters reached base to begin the inning, capped by a looping single over the first baseman's head off the bat of DiLeo to score McGeein.  Williams then put down a bunt which was thrown away by the pitcher causing a pair of runs to score and put an end to Troop's night.  Martin then put another run on the board with a sacrifice fly to make it a seven-run game, 10-3.

Weist's first home run of the season to lead off the seventh inning made it a 10-4 game.  The Spartans then added one more in the eighth inning to close the gap to five runs, but that is as close as they would get the rest of the game as the Eagles closed out the final inning to preserve the 10-5 victory.

Eastern Michigan returns remains at home for a three-game Mid-American Conference series against Western Michigan University this weekend at Oestrike Stadium.  The series gets underway Friday, April 3, at 6 p.m. and the game can be heard live on the airwaves of Eagle All-Access.
