KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped both games of the doubleheader at Kent State University Sunday, March 29, at Schoonover Stadium. The Eagles held an early lead in both contests, but the Golden Flashes came back to take both games and claim the Mid-American Conference series victory.
In the first game, the Eagles were led by senior John Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon) who recorded four hits in the contest including a pair of runs score and RBI. Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) drove in two runs as well for the Green and White while Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomindale Sr.) scored two runs out of the leadoff spot in game one. Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) took the loss in relief, after Jake Andrews (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton (Mesa C.C.)) got the start and went 5.2 innings allowing five runs
The Eagles only managed four hits in the nightcap. Wilson recorded two RBI while Tony DiLeo (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) notched the other RBI in the game. Augie Gallardo (Hemet, Calif.-Hemet (Mt. San Jacinto College) was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits while striking out five in 5.1 innings.
Eastern Michigan returns to action Tuesday, March 31, when the Eagles travel to South Bend, Ind. for a matchup with the University of Notre Dame. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. at Frank Eck Stadium.
GAME 1 – Kent State 8, Eastern Michigan 6
The Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game one. Wilson led off the contest with a base on balls, and moved up 90 feet on a Rubino single to right field. Following a double steal from Wilson and Rubino, back-to-back walks to Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) and McGeein scored the first run. Rubino came around to score later in the inning on an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Williams.
Kent State responded with three unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take its first lead of the game, 3-2.
McGeein quickly answered to knot the score at three runs apiece on the strength of his eighth home run of the season to lead off the top of the sixth. The game did not remain tied for long, however, as Tim DalPorto belted a two-run homer to give the Golden Flashes a 5-3 lead.
The Green and White regained the lead in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs on three hits to take a 6-5 advantage. Adam Dennison (Broadview Heights, Ohio-Padua Franciscan) was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt from David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington). Wilson singled in the ensuing at bat to put runners on first and third which caused KSU to go to the bullpen. Rubino greeted Josh Pierce with a two-run double to left field and then Peterson doubled in the next at bat to score Rubino.
Kent State answered the three-run frame for the Eagles, with a three-run inning themselves to take an 8-6 lead. The Golden Flashes took advantage of four hits, including a double and triple to take the two-run advantage. KSU was able to hold the Eagles scoreless for the final two innings to preserve the game one victory.
GAME 2 – Kent State 12, Eastern Michigan 4
EMU raced out to another early lead in the nightcap, scoring a trio of runs in the top of the second. A one-out walk and single from John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) and Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) put runners on first and third for DiLeo. DiLeo delivered with a double down the right field line to score Montgomery for the first run of the game. The Green and White then took advantage of a passed ball to score Mioduszewski and advance DiLeo up to third base. Wilson ended up hitting a sacrifice fly in the at bat to score DiLeo to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead.
Kent State answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the second inning to cut into the Eagles' lead. An RBI triple from Tommy Monnot and infield single from Curtis Olvey brought the Golden Flashes to within one, 3-2.
The Golden Flashes knotted the score at three in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double from Zach Beckner. The home team then broke the game open with five runs on four hits in the sixth inning to take an 8-3 lead.
Wilson brought the Green and White one run closer in the top of the seventh with an RBI single up the middle to score Dennison, who led off the frame with a walk. The run scoring single cut the Golden Flashes lead down to four, 8-4.
KSU added on four more runs on four hits in the bottom of the eighth to extend its lead out to 12-4. The Eagles went quietly in the ninth inning, as the Golden Flashes claimed the nightcap of the Sunday doubleheader.
