Eagles Even Series Against Akron Behind Solid Pitching

Charlie Land picked up his first win of the season, giving up only one run in 7.1 innings
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind the solid start from Charlie Land (Wheat Ridge, Colo.-Wheat Ridge (Mesa C.C.)) and three unanswered runs, the Eastern Michigan University baseball team evened the series against Akron with a 3-1 victory over the Zips Saturday, March 21, at Oestrike Stadium. The victory gives Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde his first Mid-American Conference victory and improves the Eagles to 7-13 overall, while the loss drops the Zips down to 9-10 and 1-1 in conference play this season.
The Green and White collected 11 hits in the contest, led by junior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) who recorded his second three-hit performance of the season. Redshirt-sophomore Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) posted a multi-hit contest as well, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) each went 1-for-3 at the dish with one run batted in. Akron was paced offensively by Daulton Mosbarger who recorded a career-high four hits.
Land (1-3) was solid in his fifth start of the season, going 7.1 innings allowing only one run on seven hits while striking out three. The right-handed senior picked up his first victory of the season on the mound. Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Lehigh) recorded his third save of the season, working the final 1.1 innings allowing only one hit and striking out one. JT Brubaker took the loss on the hill for the Zips. Brubaker (1-3) went 6.1 innings, allowing a pair of runs on 10 hits.
The Zips cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning to grab a 1-0 advantage. Mason Mamarella picked up his first career hit to lead off the inning and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Alex Dirienzo. Mosbarger continued his solid day at the plate with an RBI double over Jordan Peterson's (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) head in right field to bring in the first run of the contest.
EMU answered in the bottom of the sixth to knot the score at one run apiece. Montgomery laced a two-out single into right field to score Peterson who led off the inning with a single through the right side.
The Eagles grabbed their first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh. Three consecutive singles from Mioduszewski, Adam Dennison (Broadview Heights, Ohio-Padua Franciscan), and Wilson loaded the bases with no outs. Following a David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington) fly out to shallow center field, Akron Head Coach Rick Rembielak brought in Mosbarger to set up the lefty-lefty matchup against Williams. Williams delivered with a sacrifice fly into center field, scoring Mioduszewski to make the score 2-1. Mosbarger worked out of the inning, however, to keep it a one-run game.
Eastern tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning to take a two-run lead, 3-1. Mioduszewski knocked in Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel) who led off the frame with a single, with an RBI fielder's choice.
Delaplane returned to the mound for the ninth inning after getting the final out of the eighth. The sophomore gave up a leadoff single but got a 4-6-3 double play and a great play up the middle from John Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon) to secure the two-run victory for the Green and White.
Eastern Michigan and Akron will conclude the three-game Mid-American Conference series Sunday, March 22. First pitch for the rubber match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Oestrike Stadium.
