EMU Bats Silenced in Series Finale Against Akron

3/22/2015 4:22:00 PM | Baseball

Mitch McGeein blasted his seventh home run of the season in the ninth inning

YPSILANITI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team could only muster one run on the strength of Mitchell McGeein's (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) ninth inning home run in the 3-1 series finale defeat to the University of Akron Sunday afternoon, March 22, at Oestrike Stadium.  The Eagles fall to 7-14 and 1-2 in the Mid-American Conference while the Zips improve to 10-10 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

The Green and White could only manage four hits in the contest, led by McGeein's two knocks.  Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and David Lett (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington) recorded the other hits for EMU.  Lett registered his first career double in the third inning for the Eagles.  Akron scored three runs on 11 hits in the game, led by third baseman Dom Iero's three base hits.  Daulton Mosbarger was 2-for-3 at the plate while knocking in a pair of runs for the Zips.

Senior Jake Andrews (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton (Mesa C.C.)) was solid on the mound for the Eagles once again, but was saddled with the loss.  Andrews (2-2) went 6.2 innings, while giving up one earned run on seven hits and striking out three.  Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) pitched two innings out of the pen, giving up one unearned run on three hits and striking out three as well.  Jon Pusateri was credited with the victory for the Zips, pitching six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts.  Matt LaRocca recorded the final three outs for Akron, picking up his fourth save of the season.

Akron jumped on the board in the top of the first inning to grab a 1-0 advantage.  Mosbarger came around to score on an RBI single off the bat of Joey Havrilak to give the Zips the early lead.

The Zips took advantage of an error to tack on another run in the top of the seventh.  Mosbarger continued his solid weekend at the plate, driving in Mason Mamarella who reached on an Eagle miscue to extend the Zips lead to 2-0.  Akron added an insurance run in the ninth to go on top 3-0.

The Green and White got on the board in the bottom of the ninth when McGeein led off the frame belting his league-leading seventh home run of the season over the left field wall.  The long ball brought the Eagles to within a pair, 3-1.  LaRocca was able to work around a walk following the homer to preserve the two-run victory for the Zips.

Eastern Michigan returns to Oestrike Stadium Wednesday, March 22, when the Eagles host Wayne State University in a non-conference matchup.  First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
