FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team had one Eagle named a First Team All-American, as Donald Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka) finished runner-up in the triple jump at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, March 14.
Overall, the Eagles tied for 23rd with eight points out of more than 60 teams at the NCAA Championships. EMU finished ahead of nationally-known powers Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Florida State, Alabama, Arizona State, North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Washington, Colorado, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas and UCLA.
Scott battled his way to the top of the standings, gaining the sixth seed into the final flight and registering the top jump with a mark of 16.75 meters/54 feet 11.50-inches. The mark was a personal best for the redshirt-senior, but he was soon dethroned by Florida's Marquis Dendy with a jump of 17.07 meters/56 feet.
Scott notched another personal record, a jump of 16.84 meters/55 feet 3-inches to become the first Eagle to ever surpass the 55-foot mark. However, he was unable to catch up to Dendy, who went on to break the NCAA meet record at 17.37 meters/57 feet. The pair of athletes was dominant among the competition, as Scott bested the bronze medalist by over a foot. With his finish, Scott earned First Team All-American honors for the first time in his indoor career.
Eastern will take a short break before welcoming the outdoor campaign, as the squad will head to Raleigh, N.C. for the Raleigh Relays, Friday and Saturday, March 27-28.
