EMU Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Santa Clara

3/1/2015 11:18:00 PM | Baseball

The EMU baseball team won both games Sunday to split the four-game series against the Broncos

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team swept a doubleheader from Santa Clara University, March 1, to salvage a split in the four-game series against the Broncos at Stephen Schott Stadium.  The Eagles defeated the Broncos, 5-4, in 10 innings in the first game before claiming the nightcap, 11-7.  EMU improves to 5-8 with the sweep, while the Broncos drop to 6-5.

Eastern Michigan returns to the diamond next weekend, March 6-8, as the Eagles travel to Atlanta, Ga. for a three-game set with Georgia State University.  The series gets underway Friday, March 6, with first pitched slated for 6 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.

GAME 1 – Eastern Michigan 5, Santa Clara 4

Eastern Michigan used extra innings to defeat Santa Clara in the first game of the doubleheader, 5-4.  The Broncos battled back from an early four-run deficit to tie the game at 4-4 in the seventh inning, but the Green and White took advantage of a costly error to score the game-winning run in the 10th inning.

The Eagles picked up eight hits in the game, with John Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon) and Tony DiLeo (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) leading the way with two knocks apiece.  Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) and John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) each collected a pair of RBI in the contest.  The Broncos had 12 hits, but left 13 runners on base.

Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) picked up the victory in relief as the sophomore tossed the final four innings.  Delaplane (2-0) gave up one run on four hits while striking out a career-best seven.  Jake Andrews (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton (Mesa C.C.)) got the start for the Green and White, going six innings allowing two earned runs on eight hits.

EMU got the bats going early, scoring four runs in the first inning.  Rubino led off the game with a sharp single up the middle and moved up to second on his third stolen base of the season.  Following a walk to Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)), McGeein ripped a two-run double to score Rubino and Peterson to take an early 2-0 lead.  Montgomery sent one over the outfield wall in the ensuing at-bat to extend the Green and White's lead out to 4-0.

The Broncos used solo runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to cut the Eagles lead down to 4-3.

Head Coach Mark Van Ameyde went to the bullpen to begin the bottom half of the seventh inning, bringing in Delaplane.  Cortopassi greeted Delaplane with a leadoff double and later advanced to third on a balk.  Kyle Czaplak delivered an RBI single for the Broncos to tie the game at 4-4.

SCU loaded the bases with no one out in the eighth inning, but Delaplane buckled down and struck out the next three batters to work out of the jam and send the game to the ninth inning deadlocked at four.  The teams went scoreless in the ninth, sending the game into extra innings.

Rubino led off the 10th with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of freshman Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern).   Peterson then recorded an infield single, but shortstop Austin Fisher threw it away allowing Rubino to come all the way around from second base on the play to give the Eagles a 5-4 lead.  Delaplane recorded the final three outs in the bottom half of the 10th to preserve the one-run victory for the Green and White.

GAME 2 – Eastern Michigan 11, Santa Clara 7

The Green and White fell down early in the nightcap, but scored a season-high 11 runs to complete the doubleheader sweep.  Junior Augie Gallardo (Hemet, Calif.-Hemet (Mt. San Jacinto College)) got the start in game two and picked up his first win for the Green and White.  Gallardo (1-1) pitched into the seventh inning, allowing four runs on 10 hits while striking out two.

EMU collected 12 hits in the seven-inning affair, including three round-trippers.  Mitchell McGeein blasted a pair of homers in the game.  It was the second time the junior hit a pair of long balls in a single game as he did so last season against Northern Kentucky, March 15, in a 13-2 victory over the Norse.  John Montgomery hit his second home run of the day and third of the season in the nightcap as well.  Nine Eagles collected hits in the game, led by a career-high three from Brennan Williams.

Austin Fisher's RBI infield single gave Santa Clara an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.

The Green and White's bats came alive in the fourth inning as the Eagles scored four runs on four hits.  McGeein's leadoff home run knotted the score at 1-1.  After a Mike Mioduszewski infield single, Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel) and Williams produced back-to-back RBI doubles to give Eastern a 3-1 advantage.  EMU tacked-on one more run in the inning as Williams came around to score on an error by the Santa Clara shortstop to take a 4-1 lead.

Following a leadoff walk to Peterson, McGeein blasted his team-best fifth homer of the season to push the Eagles lead out to 6-1 in the top of the fifth.  EMU added another run on Tony DiLeo's RBI single in the sixth to go up 7-1.

Montgomery's second homer of the day came in the top of the seventh inning.  The Green and White added three more runs in the final inning to make the score 11-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh. Two of the runs came via a pair of bases-loaded walks to John Rubino and DiLeo.

Santa Clara scored six runs on six hits in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Broncos deficit proved to be too much as the Green and White held on for the 11-7 victory in game two.
