Late Walks Doom Eagles in 8-5 Loss to Georgia State

3/6/2015 7:57:00 PM | Baseball

The Panthers scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to claim game one of the series

ATLANTA, Ga. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped an 8-5 decision to Georgia State University as the Eagles (5-9) and the Panthers (8-5) opened up a three-game set at the GSU Baseball Complex Friday, March 6. The Panthers took advantage of four late walks and scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth to claim game one of the series.

The Green and White recorded 10 hits in the contest, including three-hit performances from Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) and Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter).  Mioduszewski recorded the Eagles' two RBI in the contest as well.  Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) finished the game 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and a stolen base.  Georgia State posted 12 hits, led by Caden Bailey who was 4-for-5 while Joey Roach matched a season-high with four RBI for the Panthers.

Ryan Lavoie (Sterling Heights, Mich.-Stevenson) started on the mound for the Green and White, allowing four runs in four innings while striking out three.  Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) was saddled with the loss in relief.  Delaplane (2-1) struggled out of the pen, giving up three runs in 0.1 innings while walking three.  Connor Stanley (2-0) picked up the win for the Panthers, working a scoreless 1.2 innings of relief.  Kevin Burgee recorded his third save of the season as the senior pitched a perfect ninth for GSU.

Georgia State opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead over the Eagles.  The Panthers capitalized on a pair of EMU errors to score Ryan Blanton who led off the inning with a walk.

The Eagles cracked the scoreboard in the top of the third to knot the score, 1-1.  Wilson began the frame with a leadoff base on balls and moved up to second on his second stolen base of the season.  Following another walk to John Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon), EMU took advantage of a GSU throwing error by third baseman Caden Bailey to score Wilson. A second straight error from the Panther defense loaded the bases up for the Green and White, but Nathan Bates struck out McGeein and John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra) to end the threat.

GSU quickly responded in the bottom of the third to regain the lead 2-1, after Roach drove in Bailey with a sacrifice fly.

EMU answered with a solo run in the top of the fourth to tie the game once again, 2-2.  Tony DiLeo (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) walked with one-out and advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt from Bates during the next at-bat to Wilson.  Wilson drew another walk and during the ensuing at-bat, Bates threw another one away on a pick-off attempt which allowed DiLeo to touch home.

The Panthers grabbed the lead once again in the bottom half of the fourth.  A two-run single by Roach with the bases loaded gave the home squad a 4-2 advantage.

After the teams went scoreless in the fifth inning, EMU pulled within one run using the Panthers fifth error of the contest.  Mioduszewski led off the frame with his second double of the season and came around to score from second on a two-out error from the GSU shortstop.

The Green and White took its first lead of the contest in the top of the seventh after GSU Head Coach Greg Frady went to the bullpen to begin frame.   A double from McGeein and a pair of walks to Peterson and Dennison set up Mioduszewski with the bases loaded.  The redshirt-sophomore delivered with a two RBI single to give the Eagles a 5-4 advantage.

The lead was short lived, however, as the Panthers struck for a run in the bottom half of the seventh to tie the game at five runs apiece.  GSU then took advantage of four walks to score three runs in the bottom of the eighth to grab an 8-5 lead over the Green and White.  EMU went 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth as the Panthers took game one.

The Eagles and Panthers continue the series Saturday, March 7, for the second time in a three-game set.  First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the GSU Baseball Complex.  Live statistics will be available on GeorgiaStateSports.com.
