Eagles Drop Second Straight to Georgia State, 5-4

Austin Wilson matched a career-high with three hits against the Panthers

ATLANTA, Ga. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team dropped the second game of a three-game set against Georgia State Saturday, March 7.  Junior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.) recorded three hits in the contest, but it was not enough as the Panthers (9-5) held on for a 5-4 victory over the Eagles (5-10) at the GSU Baseball Complex.

The Eagles recorded eight hits in the contest, led by Wilson's three knocks.  The three hits for Wilson matched a career-high, while the junior also recorded an RBI and run scored.  Senior John Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon) notched his fourth multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-5 while scoring a run.  Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) and Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) each drove in a run in as well for Eastern.  Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) was 0-for-2 in the game which brought his 12-game hitting streak to an end.

Charlie Land (Wheat Ridge, Colo.-Wheat Ridge (Mesa C.C.)) took the loss on the hill for the Green and White.  Land (0-3) pitched into the seventh inning, giving up four runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out three.  Logan Barnette (1-0) posted his first victory of the season in relief for the Panthers.  Matt Rose recorded the save in the contest, after starting the game at first base.  Rose was 2-for-3 with two RBI at the plate and recorded his second save of the season after pitching the ninth inning for GSU.

EMU got on the board with a first inning run to take a 1-0 lead before GSU even stepped up to the plate.  Wilson roped a one-out triple into right field and came around to score on an RBI single from Peterson in the ensuing at-bat.

The Eagles and Panthers went quietly in the second and third innings, before GSU knotted the score at one apiece with a run in the bottom of the fourth.  Georgia State then grabbed the lead in the fifth with two runs to take a 3-1 advantage over the Green and White.

Eastern responded in the top of the sixth, however, scoring a pair of runs to tie the game, 3-3.  Rubino led off the frame with a single to right and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Wilson.  Following a Peterson fly out to left, the Eagles took advantage of an error by the GSU left fielder as McGeein reached base and Rubino came home to score from second on the play.  After the error, GSU Head Coach Greg Frady went to the bullpen to bring in senior Jerry Stuckey.  Mioduszewski greeted Stuckey with an RBI single to bring in McGeein to tie the game.

Georgia State recorded a run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly off the stick of Matt Rose to take the lead once again.  GSU then tacked-on another run on its second successful double steal of the series in the bottom of the eighth to extend the Panthers lead out to 5-3.

EMU made a bid to knot the score, but could only settle for one run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single from Wilson.  The Green and White left the bases loaded in its final at-bats, as GSU's Matt Rose was able to strikeout Peterson looking to record his second save of the season and preserve the 5-4 victory for the Panthers.

The Eagles and Panthers conclude the three-game series Sunday, March 8, at the GSU Baseball Complex with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.  Live statistics will again be available on GeorgiaStateSports.com.
