LAKEWOOD, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team began its spring schedule Monday, Feb. 9, defeating in-state rival Central Michigan University, 4-1, in the first round of match play at the Mid-American Match Play Challenge. The tournament, which is hosted by Bowling Green, is being played on the Royal Lakes course at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club.

The eight participating teams will return to the course Tuesday, Feb. 10, to complete round two and three. The field played the opening round of 18 on Monday and began into the second round, but rain caused play to be suspended. Match play will resume tomorrow with the final two rounds, which have been adjusted to only nine holes per round.

Sophomore Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) won her opening round match for the top-seeded Eagles, 4&3, over Arielle Roberts. Redshirt-junior Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) cruised to a 5&3 win against Grace Labrecque, while freshman Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) notched a 6&5 victory versus Natalie Johnson. Freshman Kylie Raines (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman) finished with a 4&3 decision over Amanda Walsh, while the Chippewas managed to get a 2-up victory by Chloe Guschewski against senior Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam).

In other first round action, Western Michigan defeated IPFW, 3-2, Bowling Green bested Akron, 3-2, and Northern Illinois downed Ohio, 4-1.

Eastern Michigan Michigan will again tee-off against Bowling Green tomorrow in round two, beginning at 7:30 a.m. Round three pairings are still to be determined.

Schools are competing in teams of five with the seeds determined by their current GolfStat rankings. Each of the matches is worth one point to the winner. If the competitors end up all-square after 18 holes, each school received ½ point. The school with the most points after the five matches wins.

Unlike stroke play, in which the unit of scoring is the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds of golf, match play scoring consists of individual holes won, halved or lost. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point. Golfers play as normal, counting the strokes taken on a given hole. The golfer with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the golfers tie, then the hole is halved. Also, once a player is "up" more holes than there are holes remaining to play the match is over.

Live scoring for Tuesday's rounds are available at GolfStat.com.
