Men's Golf Wraps Up Day One of Yestingsmeier Match Play

No. 1 Eastern Michigan edges No. 8 Florida Atlantic via a tiebreaker

Live Scoring.

DADE City, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team won its first round match with Florida Atlantic University at the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play, but is trailing Ball State University in round two before it was suspended by rain.

Originally scheduled for a three-round event, the event will not crown a true champion as it will end after the second round once play resumes tomorrow. Should EMU defeat BSU in the second round, it will tie for the championship because of time constraints with departing flights.

Schools are competing in teams of six with the seeds determined by their current GolfStat rankings. Each of the six matches is worth one point to the winner. If the competitors end up all-square after 18 holes, each school received ½ point. The school with the most points after the six matches wins.

Unlike stroke play, in which the unit of scoring is the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds of golf, match play scoring consists of individual holes won, halved or lost. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point. Golfers play as normal, counting the strokes taken on a given hole. The golfer with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the golfers tie, then the hole is halved. Also, once a player is "up" more holes than there are holes remaining to play the match is over.

In the opening round, the Eagles and Owls actually finished tied at 3-3. Since the match finished in a 3-3 tie, a tiebreaker needed to be employed to determine who advanced. Because EMU won its three matches by a total of six holes, compared to FAU winning its two matches by a total of four holes, the Green and White were declared the victor.

The Eagles' Brett White (Caledonia, Mich.-East Kentwood) took a 4-and-2 decision over Derron Peyton, while senior Michael Blair (Ancaster, Ontario, Canada-Nelson-Pfeiffer) earned a 4-and-2 victory over Cody Christensen. Junior Jared Multer (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview-Grand Rapids C.C.) upended P. Gerboles-Parrillas, 1 up, but Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth), Joey Kremer (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Senator O'Connor) and Nicholas Ross (Dundas, Ontario, Canada-Highland Secondary) each fell in their matches.

In other first round action, Ball State defeated Seton Hall, 4-2, Toledo bested Dayton, 4.5-1.5, and Miami advanced past Ohio, 5-1.

With the team victory, the Eagles began their second round match with host Ball State before the rain halted play. The Cardina;s currently leads the Eagles, 4-2, but none of the six matches have reached the half-way mark yet.

Live scoring for Tuesday's rounds are available at BirdieFire.com.
