Eagles rebound versus Ball State to share the title with the University of Toledo

DADE CITY, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The top-seeded Eastern Michigan University golf team finished off a 4-2 victory over No. 5 seed Ball State Tuesday, Feb. 10, in the second round of the shortened Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play event. The Cardinals also served as the tournament's host at the Lake Jovita Golf Course.

EMU's second-round match against BSU began yesterday before play was suspended because of rain with the Cardinals on top by a 4-2 tally.

With the win, EMU finishes 2-0-0 at the fourth-annual event and was declared co-champions, along with Toledo. The third and final round was originally scheduled for today but was cancelled because of time constraints.

EMU got its first victory from sophomore Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) who nabbed a 2-and-1 decision over Michael BanDeventer, while senior Michael Blair (Ancaster, Ontario, Canada-Nelson (Pfeiffer)) secured a 1-up win over Zach Yinger. Eastern's final two victories of the match came from Jared Multer (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) and Joey Kremer (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Senator O'Connor) who notched 2-and-1 and 3-and-2 decisions, respectively.

Toledo also earned a 4-2 victory over Miami University in the Championship Bracket, while Seton Hall nabbed the tiebreaker over Florida Atlantic and Ohio notched a 5-1 decision over Dayton in the Consolation Bracket.

Schools are competing in teams of six with the seeds determined by their current GolfStat rankings. Each of the six matches is worth one point to the winner. If the competitors end up all-square after 18 holes, each school received ½ point. The school with the most points after the six matches wins.

Unlike stroke play, in which the unit of scoring is the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds of golf, match play scoring consists of individual holes won, halved or lost. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point. Golfers play as normal, counting the strokes taken on a given hole. The golfer with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the golfers tie, then the hole is halved. Also, once a player is "up" more holes than there are holes remaining to play the match is over.

The Eagles will take a two-week break before heading to Long Beach, Calif. to participate in the Del Walker Intercollegiate, Mar. 2-3.
