AKRON, Ohio/SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team wrapped up the Akron and Meyo Invitationals, Feb. 7, rewriting parts of the EMU record books in the process.
At the Meyo Invitational, Eastern had three standout performances that marked themselves in EMU laurels. Donald Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka) improved on his own record in the triple jump by over a foot, bounding 16.70 meters/54 feet 9.50-inches to handily win the event by nearly a meter. His jump moved him back up to the top of the NCAA leaderboard, pacing the nation by almost six inches, and he also moved up in world rankings from 13th to fifth. Scott also claimed the record at the Meyo Invitational, besting a 15-year old mark from Drexell Owusa by over two feet.
Another individual standout performance came in the mile race, in which every competing Eagle recorded a personal record. Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio-Maumee) led the way in 4:02.61, which is a four-second improvement from just two weeks ago and edged its way into the EMU all-time top-10 list as the ninth-fastest mark in program history. Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland-Mountain Ridge (Alderson Broaddus)) also improved on his time from a fortnight ago, crossing the line in 4:09.86, while the quartet of Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich.-Mason), Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis.-River Falls), Warren Witchell (Williamston, Mich.-Dansville), and Caleb Hess (Osseo, Mich.-Osseo) all finished within two seconds, ranging from 4:14.01 to 4:15.65.
Eastern's final record book-worthy performance was in the final event of the day, the 4x400m relay. The lineup of Cameron Bolton (Missouri City, Texas-Hightower), Jeff Elam (Latrobe, Pa.-Greater Latrobe Senior), Matthew Williams (Moreno Valley, Calif.-Vista Del Lago), and Mason Waynes (Kenosha, Wis.-Bradford) recorded the third-fastest time in EMU history after winning in 3:09.12. The time is ranked 10th among NCAA Division I schools, and it is the fastest time by an EMU lineup since Erik Lindstrom, Derrick Jackson, Fabian Rollins, and Clement Chukwu clocked in at 3:08.97 in 1998.
In the remaining events on the track, Mark Cooke (Edison, N.J.-John P. Stevens) garnered the highest finish for the team in the 400m dash, crossing the line in 47.99 seconds for 15th, while Nick James (Troy, Ohio-Troy) recorded a personal best of 49.35 seconds. Stephen Sparks (Lancaster, Ohio-Lancaster), Jason Ervin (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Farmington), and Scott Bradley (Battle Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) all finished within two tenths of a second of each other in the 800m, with Sparks pacing the trio in 1:53.53 for 28th, followed by Ervin in 1:53.60 in his first collegiate 800m, while Bradley clocked in at 1:53.68 for 32nd. In the 3000m, Cameron Trinh (Oakland, Calif.-Skyline) crossed the line in 9:01.25. James O'Shea (Toledo, Ohio-St. Johns Jesuit) also competed on the field, finishing 15th in the high jump with a mark of 1.95 meters/6 feet 4.75-inches.
In the Buckeye State, Eastern saw its competitors take part in the throws and the remainder of the heptathlon. Levi Selvig (Flushing, Mich.-Flushing) finished fourth in both the 1000m and the pole vault, running the distance event in 2:51.07 while he notched a personal record of 4.30 meters/14 feet 1.25-inches in the pole vault. Overall, the senior finished 12th with a mark of 4,118 points, hindered slightly by a disqualification in the 60m hurdles.
In the throws, Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky) kept up powerful performances in the weight throw. The junior finished second overall and was the top collegiate finisher in the gold division, throwing 20.70 meters/67 feet 11.00-inches. In the blue division of the weight throw, Andrew Wentz (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) finished third with a launch of 17.49 meters/57 feet 4.75-inches, while Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill.-Williamsville) threw 16.67 meters/54 feet 8.25-inches for seventh. Williams also competed in the blue division of the shot put, finishing third with a throw of 15.52 meters/50 feet 11.00-inches, just behind Quinn Levering (Caledonia, Ohio-River Valley)'s throw of 15.93 meters/53 feet 3.25-inches. Mike Hierholzer (Medina, Ohio-Medina) also competed, placing sixth with a mark of 15.17 meters/49 feet 9.25-inches.
The Eagles will return to action next week, heading to Geneva, Ohio for the two-day SPIRE Invitational. Action will kick off Friday, Feb. 13 at the SPIRE Institute and will continue through Saturday, Feb. 14. Another group of Eastern athletes will head to Allendale, Mich. for the GVSU "Big Meet" on Friday, Feb. 13.
