Three EMU Records Broken on Third Day of MAC Championships

Women's swimming and diving sits in third with 344 points

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's swimming and diving team fell to third on the third day of the 2015 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, trailing Bowling Green by 10 points with 344 points, while Akron has extended their lead with 440 points. Following the Eagles are Buffalo (318), Miami (285), Ohio (254.5), Toledo (229.5), and Ball State (114).
The Eagles did not qualify any athletes to the finals of the 400 IM, as Audra Burtch (Goshen, Ind.-Concord) was the sole representative for the Green and White in the event. Burtch completed the prelims touching in at 4:35.15, her second-fastest of the 2014-15 season.
Eastern had a historic showing in the 100 fly, with all four competing swimmers qualifying to either the championship heat or the consolation final. Carly Jackson (La Porte, Ind.-La Porte) kicked things off in prelims with an EMU record-breaking performance to gain entry into the championship final, touching in at 54.47 and becoming the first Eagle to ever swim a sub-55-second 100 fly. Qualifying into the consolation finals were Jessie Godlewski (Apex, N.C.-Apex) in 55.02 seconds, Sara Ghaffari (Bolinas, Sweden-Torsbergsgynasiet) in 55.80, and Makenzie Garringer (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) in 56.49. Godlewski's mark was good for second all-time, and the senior improved on her time in the B finals after finishing second in 54.65 seconds. Ghaffari finished third in the B final in a career-best 55.28, good for fourth on EMU's all-time list, and Garringer touched in at 56.49 for a new personal record. In the championship heat, Jackson became the first Eagle to swim two sub-55-second times, finishing fifth in 54.59 seconds as she retained her spot at the top of the EMU record books.
In the 200 free, Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) finished in 1:51.36 to earn a spot in the consolation final, and Becca Detro (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) claimed the top seed going into the championship final in a career-best 1:48.85. Detro's mark ranks as the fifth-fastest in EMU history, as she becomes part of an elite group of five Eagles who have ever swum below a 1:49.00 in the event. In the consolation final, Van Allen finished seventh and 15th overall in 1:51.32. Detro held on to reigning MAC champion Jess Powers of Buffalo through the first 100 yards, but fell to fourth in 1:50.19.
The pair of Monica Dorszewski (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) and Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering) also made their way in to the B and A finals, respectively, in the 100 breast. Dorszewski touched in at 1:02.85 in the prelims, while Worthley posted the second-fastest time in EMU history in 1:02.39 to earn the fifth seed in the championship final. Dorszewski finished third in the consolation heat in 1:02.72, and Worthley finished eighth in the championship final with a time of 1:02.75.
Another EMU record was broken in the 100 back, this time twice within the same day. Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area) became just the second Eagle to post a time under 55 seconds in her preliminary swim, earning her first ever championship appeareance in 54.88 seconds. Mitcheltree went on to best her record once more, taking fifth in 54.59 seconds. The Eagles qualified two Eagles to the consolation final, paced by Mary Kate MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Detroit Country Day) in 55.91 seconds while Haley Shaw (Fenton, Mich.-Fenton) also qualified in 56.17 seconds. The pair delivered a 1-2 punch in the consolation final with MacLean in 55.34 seconds, the third-fastest in EMU laurels, and Shaw in 55.73 seconds for the fifth-fastest time in program history.
The Eagles had a remarkable performance in the 3-meter dive, claiming five of the eight championship spots. Melynee Saya (Nashua, N.J.-Nashua) led the way wth 289.90 points for the second seed, followed by Lauren Dark (Chelsea, Mich.-Chelsea) with 286.85 points, Becky Deacon (Sherwood Park, Alberta-Vimy Ridge Academy) with 282.95 points, and Karly Taylor (Munster, Ind.-Munster) with 278.70 points. Earning the eighth qualifying spot was Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser) with 267.30 points. The quintet will compete for the championship title during tomorrow's evening session.

The lineup of Mitcheltree, Dorszewski, Jackson, and Godlewski touched in at 3:40.82, breaking an EMU record in the process. Mitcheltree started off swimming the first split just .02 seconds off her school record, in 54.61 seconds before Dorszewski got the team into third place positioning. After Jackson hit the water, the team retained its positioning, and Godlewski finished things up by swimming the final 100-yard leg and fending off Bowling Green for the bronze medal finish.
The 2015 MAC Swimming and Diving Championships will wrap up tomorrow, Feb. 8. Preliminary heats for the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, and 200 fly will begin at 11 a.m., with the finals contested beginning at 7 p.m. Early heats for the 1650 free will begin at 5:20 p.m., while the championship finals for the 3-meter dive and the 400 free relay will cap off the meet with awards to follow.
