Eastern will square off with three schools from the Golden State
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After a nine day layoff the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team is scheduled to return to the court after taking its longest road trip of the season. The Eagles (1-7) will head to the Golden State of California for a trio of matchups.
First, the Green and White will take on California State University-Northridge Tuesday, Feb. 24, in a 2 p.m. PT match. EMU will take a day off before hitting the court again Thursday, Feb. 26, to square off with California State University-Fullerton at 1:30 p.m. PT. In their final match on the West Coast, the Eagles will head to Irvine, Calif. for a 1:30 p.m. PT dual with the University of California-Irvine on Friday, Feb. 27.
Eastern Michigan has seen Northridge on a pair of occasions since sponsoring varsity tennis. The Eagles and Matadors have split the all-time series, 1-1, with CSUN getting the best of the Green and White in its last matchup, March 5, 2013. EMU dropped a 5-2 decision as Mariya Toncheva and Zsofia Biro were the only Eagles to grab victories. In singles action, Toncheva recorded a 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 victory at No. 5 before Biro knocked off Jessica Warren when Warren retired during the third set.
The Green and White is 2-0 all-time versus Cal-State Fullerton. In their last outing, Feb. 26, 2008, the Eagles got right out of the blocks, sweeping the doubles points. Vanessa Frankowski and Tina Bestehorn teamed up at the top flight, winning by an 8-3 score. The other duo, newcomers Aleksandra Stankovic and Sandra Wikstrom, took down the opposition by an 8-4 score. In singles play, EMU won five out of six flights, including straight set wins at the No. 1, 4, 5 and 6 spots.
Friday's contest with UC-Irvine will be the first between the two programs. It will also be the final road match in non-conference play for the Eagles, as they return home March 7 for a doubleheader with the University of Illinois-Chicago and Oakland University at the Chippewa Racquet Club.
