NORTHRIDGE, Calif. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University's women's tennis team began its West Coast swing Tuesday, Feb. 24, when it dropped a 6-1 decision at California State University-Northridge. The Eagles (1-8) won the doubles point but the Matadors (5-0) swept the singles matches.
The Green and White began play by taking two-of-three doubles matches. Klara Supejova and Andrea Martinovska teamed up to knock off Vivian Lin and Ki Kim at No. 1, 6-3, while Daphne Friedrichs and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna took down Criss Rodriguez and Jessica Warren by the same tally at No. 3. Ani Gogvadze and Maria Paula Ribero dropped their match at No. 2 as Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poel defeated them, 6-3.
Eastern was unable to take a set in singles action, dropping all six matches. Supejova fell at No. 1 to Lin, 6-3, 6-2, while Hsu knocked off Gogvadze, 6-2, 6-4 in the second slot. Martinovska was defeated by Kim, 7-6, 6-4, in the No. 3 spot while Friedrichs fell, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4. The final two matches were straight set losses as well, Ribero dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision, while Anna Veleva fell, 6-2, 6-4.
"Our doubles was good and the energy great in our doubles wins," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "However, shortly into singles we let the air out of that balloon, and we can't let that happen. We have another opportunity to improve our outdoor play on Thursday, and I expect better results."
The Eagles return to action Friday, Feb. 27, when they travel to Fullerton, Calif. for a matchup with the Titans of California State University-Fullerton. The match is slated for 1:30 p.m. PT at the Titan Courts.
