KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Despite tallying a school record-breaking 195.575, the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team fell in a Mid-American Conference dual to in-state foe Western Michigan University, 196.175-195.575, Friday, Feb. 20.

EMU's score of 195.575 topped the Green and White's all-time best by .025, when Eastern nabbed a 195.550 at the Mid-American Conference Championships, Mar. 19, 2004.

"I'm really excited about our performance tonight. We have talked the last couple weeks about how important it is to hit all four events and that was where we struggled the last two meets," stated Head Coach Jay Santos.  "Tonight we did exactly that and while we did not get the win it was our best overall performance of the season so far.  Breaking a school record is a big deal and I'm very happy for the team but I'm prouder of the way they went on the road and executed some great gymnastics.  It was a close meet and they battled right to the very end.  Now we have another chance to go home on Sunday and see if we can repeat this performance."

Competing in just the third all-around competition of her career, senior Carinna Lo Bello scored a career-best 39.150 for a second-place finish, including a career-high 9.850 in her beam routine. The all-around score ties for sixth in EMU laurels, whie her score on the beam is tied for ninth in Eagle history. Following Lo Bello, senior Anna Willette placed third in in the all-around competition with a score of 39.100.

After the vault rotation, the Eagles led the Bronco, 49.075-49.025, but it was WMU's bar score that put them in the lead after the second rotation. On the vault,  Kendall Valentin led the Green and White, tying for second with a career-high 9.850, which also tied for sixth all-time in EMU laurels, while Paulina Miller placed fourth with a career-best 9.825. Lo Bello, Willette, and freshman Julia Schwartz all placed in a tie for sixth in the event with identical 9.800s, tying a career high for Schwartz, while Sydney McEachern rounded out the scoring for the Green and White with a 9.625.

Lo Bello paced the EMU lineup on the uneven bars, earning a 9.800 and a third-place finish in the event, while Nikki Paterson, Lacey Rubin, and Valentin all scored matching 9.775s to tie for fifth, marking a career-high for Rubin.
