ALLENDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team completed competition at the GVSU Big Meet, Feb. 13, while another group of sprinters kicked things off at the SPIRE Invitational.
At the SPIRE Invitational, four Eagles competed in the 200m dash. Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams) paced the Eagles in 24.87 seconds for 16th, while Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area) notched a top-20 finish in 25.11 seconds. Closely following the pair was Danielle Clark (Paramaribo, Suriname-Ewald P. Meyer Lyceum) in 25.18 seconds for 22nd, while Chante Roberts (Lansing, Mich.-Waverly) clocked in at a collegiate-best 25.34 seconds.
At the GVSU Big Meet, the Eagles saw their most success in the pole vault, sweeping the top three spots. Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio-Pandora-Gilboa), fresh off clearing the second-best height in EMU history last week, picked up the win with a jump of 4.13 meters/13 feet 6.50-inches. Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich.-Grand Rapids Christian) tacked on more than eight inches to her personal record, placing second at 3.88 meters/12 feet 8.75-inches and punching her ticket to the 2015 Mid-American Conference Championships with a conference qualifying standard, and Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio-Fairmont) matched Pollatz's mark to place third.
Eastern earned one more win from Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia-Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) in the long jump invitational. The freshman jumped just one inch off her personal record, winning with a mark of 5.80 meters/19 feet 0.50-inches. Dreimane and Uy also competed in the 60m hurdles, with Uy taking 18th in 8.94 seconds while Dreimane finished 24th in 9.04 seconds and Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J.-Toms River North) split the difference with a 20th-place finish in 9.01 seconds.
The pole vault duo of Pollatz and Uy also competed in the long jump open section; Pollatz finished 11th with a leap of 5.02 meters/16 feet 5.75-inches and Uy was not far off her mark at 5.00 meters/16 feet 5.00-inches.
In the weight throw, Adrienne Waisner (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) had the top finish for the Eagles with a mark of 15.54 meters/51 feet for 14th, and Helga Volgyi (Szombathely, Hungary-Savaria Technical College) placed 16th at 15.04 meters/49 feet 4.25-inches. Darcie Marion (Adrian, Mich.-Madison) competed in both the weight throw and the shot put, placing 19th in the weight throw at 14.78 meters/48 feet 6-inches and 13th in the shot put with a throw of 11.03 meters/36 feet 2.25-inches. Rounding out the field events, Kristina Coyne (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Chartiers Valley) finished 15th with a jump of 1.58 meters/5 feet 2.25-inches.
On the track, Eastern also saw a handful of personal records. Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier) ran her first 800m of the season, finishing 16th in a career-best and team season-best 2:14.94. Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich.-Saline) paced the Eagles in the 5000m run, crossing the line in a personal-best 17:42.30 for 28th, while Anna Aldrich (Fremont, Ind.-Fremont) and Lauren Pottschmidt (Granger, Ind.-Penn) also dipped below the 18-minute barrier.
Tericka Threatt (Missouri City, Texas-Dulles) was the lone representative in the sprints, clocking in at 8.18 seconds in the 60m dash and 27.07 seconds in the 200m.
Eastern will continue with the bulk of its events at the SPIRE Invitational tomorrow, Feb. 14. Action on the field will start at 10 a.m., while track events will begin at 10:30 a.m. Live results can be found here.
