Women's Track and Field Makes Last Stop on Road to MAC Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team completed its final meet before heading to the 2015 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Eagles sent a small group to compete at the Silverston Invitational at the University of Michigan, Feb. 21.
The Eagles secured three victories on the afternoon, with a stellar showing in the throws. Adrienne Waisner (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) threw beyond 16 meters for the first time in her career, winning with a throw of 16.59 meters/54 feet 5.25-inches. Her mark moves the senior up to third on EMU's all-time list. Another performance for the record books came from Helga Volgyi (Szombathely, Hungary-Savaria Technical College), who had a mark of 15.95 meters/52 feet 4-inches for second place. The freshman's throw earned her a spot for the fifth-farthest throw in program history. Placing third was Darcie Marion (Adrian, Mich.-Madison) at 14.59 meters/47 feet 10.50-inches, who also won the shot put with a personal-best mark of 12.68 meters/41 feet 7.25-inches.
The final win came on the track, as Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) won the mile run in 4:49.25. The Green and White placed two more runners in the top-10, with Anna Aldrich recording a personal best of 5:13.21 for ninth and Lauren Pottschmidt (Granger, Ind.-Penn) sweeping in for the 10th spot.
In the remaining field events, Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich.-Grand Rapids Christian) finished third in the long jump, not far off her indoor personal best at 5.40 meters/17 feet 8.75-inches. In the high jump, SenClair McDonnell (Westland, Mich.-Churchill) placed fifth with a jump of 1.53 meters/5 feet 0.25-inches.
Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J.-Toms River North) posted a milestone time in the 60m hurdles, dipping below nine seconds for the first time in her collegiate career to post a time of 8.92 seconds for fourth. Dayna Hurd (Carson, Calif.-Carson) also notched a career time of 9.05 seconds, taking fifth, while Maya Carter (Racine, Wis.-Case) finished sixth in 9.08 seconds.
Hurd and Carter also competed in the 200m dash, with Hurd improving on her personal best set a year ago in 26.06 seconds for fourth and Carter finishing sixth in 26.67 seconds. In the 60m dash, Tericka Threatt (Missouri City, Texas-Dulles) represented the Green and White in 8.16 seconds for fifth place. Finishing off the track events, Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium-University of Leuven) paced the Eagles in the 800m run in 2:17.35 for fourth.
The Eagles will take on the MAC next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27-28, when they travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich. for the 2015 MAC Indoor Track and Field Championships.
