Three MAC Crowns Won as Eagles Lead on First Day of MAC Championships

—Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team ended the first day of the 2015 Mid-American Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships with 48.75 points to lead the conference.  Trailing Eastern are Akron (43.75), Kent State (31.75), Northern Illinois (25), Ball State (20), Toledo (19), Bowling Green (12), Buffalo (10), Central Michigan (8.75), Ohio (8), Western Michigan (5), and Miami (2).  Additionally, the Green and White had MAC champions crowned in the 5000m, pole vault, and distance medley relay. 
 
In the first field event of the day, Adrienne Waisner (Napoleon, Ohio-Napoleon) finished 17th in the weight throw with a launch of 15.11 meters/49 feet 7.00-inches.  Moving into the pole vault, Ellie Braidic (Pandora, Ohio-Pandora-Gilboa) claimed the first MAC crown of 2015.  The sophomore cleared a height of 4.03 meters/13 feet 2.50-inches for the victory, and  Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio-Fairmont) took fourth with a jump of 3.88 meters/12 feet 8.75-inches.  Finishing in a tie for seventh was Janina Pollatz (Grandview, Mich.-Grand Rapids Christian) with a vault of 3.73 meters/12 feet 2.75-inches.
 
Eastern had its strongest sprints showing in the 60m dash, in which the Green and White claimed three of the eight spots in the championship heat.  Aaliyah McKinney (South Bend, Ind.-John Adams) led the way in 7.62 seconds for the third seed, followed closely by Danielle Clark (Paramaribo, Suriname-Ewald P. Meyer Lyceum) in 7.63 second.  Freshman Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa.-Hempfield Area) claimed the sixth seed in 7.70 seconds.
 
The trio also competed in the 200m dash, with McKinney and Jones qualifying to the championships tomorrow.  McKinney earned the fourth seed in 24.82 seconds, while Jones finished seventh in 25.08 seconds.  Rounding out the group, Clark took 10th after crossing the line in 25.16 seconds.   
 
In the 60m hurdles, Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J.-Toms River North) paced the team in 9.04 seconds, finishing 12th, while Uy clocked in at 9.13 seconds for 14th and Maya Carter (Racine, Wis.-Case) took 15th in 9.15 seconds. 
 
Eastern had one qualifier to the finals in the 400m dash, with Chante Roberts (Lansing, Mich.-Waverly) taking the fourth seed in 57.13 seconds.  Also competing were Morgan Yeadon (Indianapolis, Ind.-Pike) in 57.71 seconds for 11th and Iesha Hardiman (Santa Clara, Calif.-Adrian Wilcox) taking 16th in 59.02 seconds. 
 
In the 800m, Taylor Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Mott (Lansing CC)) just missed out on the fastest time of the prelims by .01 seconds, clocking in at 2:12.84 for the second seed in the finals.  Agata Klimovich (Minsk, Belarus-Minsk School of Olympic Reserve)  finished 12th in the opening heats, crossing the line in 2:16.89 for 12th, and Rebecca Quaintance (Walled Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) finished in 2:24.25.
 
Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) defended her crown in the 5000m run, winning the title in 16:46.20.  Not far behind her was freshman Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison), clocking in at 16:47.45 as the pair finished more than five seconds ahead of the rest of the field.  Also running in the event was Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich.-Saline), notching a time of 18:02.54 in the event. 
 
Finishing up the day's field events, Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia-Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) placed fourth in the long jump with a leap of 5.74 meters/18 feet 10-inches.  Kristina Coyne (Pittsburgh, Pa.-Chartiers Valley) also represented the team, jumping 5.24 meters/17 feet 2.25-inches. 
 
In the final event of the day, the lineup of Yeadon, Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley), Knoll, and Voronko earned the final MAC championship title of the day, winning the distance medley relay in 11:39.65.  The win was a clear victory, as the Eagles finished nearly three seconds ahead of Toledo's lineup.
 
The MAC Championships will conclude tomorrow, Feb. 28 at Central Michigan University.  Field events are slated to begin at 11 a.m. while running events will start at 1:05 p.m.  Live results are provided through cfpitiming.com.
