Senior earns the award for the fourth time in his career
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Mid-American Conference announced Wednesday, Dec. 9, that Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving senior Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) was named the MAC's Scholar Athlete of the Week following his performance in the Eagles' victory at the EMU Invitational, Dec. 4-5. The award marks the fourth MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor that has been bestowed upon Henry during his EMU career, and it is his second conference honor of the week after he was also named the MAC Swimmer of the Week.
Henry, who holds 3.78 GPA in construction management, went 7-for-7, winning every event he participated in while leading the team to a first place finish. Henry accounted for 220 of Eastern Michigan's 1252 points on the weekend as EMU topped Wayne State, Ball State, Ashland, Tiffin, and IUPUI.
On the individual side, Henry continued on his impressive senior season with a trio of wins in freestyle events. After winning the 100 Freestyle for the third time in as many tries, Henry turned in his fastest time of the season in the 200 Free. Touching in with a time of 1:38.49, Henry remains unbeaten in the event this season. The Garner, N.C. product followed up his impressive performance with his first win of the season in the 500 Free. Swimming his fastest race of the season in the event, Henry needed just 4:33.51 to best the field.
Contributing to four first place relay teams, Henry helped the Eagles secure wins in the 200, 400, and 800 Free Relays as well as the 400 Medley Relay as the Green and White's anchorman. In the 200 Free Relay, the Henry and the Eagles swam the second fastest race in the MAC this season turning in a time of 1:22.22. Shaving more than three seconds of their squads preliminary time, Henry teamed up with freshman Jake Tyson, senior Dylan Crompton, and senior Erik Gissen for a season-best time of 3:01.33 and a win in the 400 Free Relay. The time also ranks as the fastest in the conference this season. As if seven first place finishes was not impressive enough, Henry played a crucial role on the Green and White's pool-record setting 400 Medley Relay team. Swimming in his usual anchorman post, Henry followed junior Cole Bateman, senior Chris Hodges, and Jake Tyson. Turning in the fastest split in the field, Henry secured the Eagles victory while the team turned in a 3:16.42 time, breaking a four-year old record previously held by Oakland University. The time also ranks atop the conference's best times this season.
Eastern Michigan returns to the pool, Jan. 15, against Purdue University as the Eagles will hit the road for the first time this season. EMU's bout with the Boilermakers is set for 5 p.m. in West Lafayette, Ind.
