Men’s Track and Field Contingent Closes First Day at Findlay Oiler Opener

A small contingent of throwers and heptathletes set a number of personal best marks on the day

FINDLAY, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team opened the lid on their 2015-16 campaign at the Findlay Oiler Opener, Dec. 4, in Findlay, Ohio. The group of Eagles consisted primarily of throwers, as well as a duo competing in the heptathlon.
In the weight throw, the Eagles were led by redshirt senior Keith Williams (Sherman, Ill. - Williamsville), who took home silver with a mark of 17.86 meters/58 feet 7.25 inches. Just behind him in fourth was redshirt senior Andrew Wentz (Napoleon, Ohio - Napoleon) with a mark of 17.36 meters/ 56 feet 11.50 inches, which set a new personal record in the event. Rounding out the top-10 Eagle finishers were sophomore Elijah Albert-Grayer (Canton, Mich. - Salem) and redshirt freshman Zach Purcilly (Troy, Mich. - Avondale) with marks of 15.99 meters/52 feet 5.50 inches and 14.64 meters/ 48 feet 0.50 inches. Both represented career highs for Albert-Grayer and Purcilly.
Junior Zach Waldron (Grand Rapids, Mich. - Northview) led the way for the Eagles in the heptathlon, as he sits in first with 3,118 points after completing the first four events. Of those four events, he took home the top spot in the high jump, long jump, and shot put. Waldron notched marks of 7.36 seconds in the 60-meter dash, for which he took second, as well as 2.00 meters/ 6 feet 6.75 inches in the high jump, 7.01 meters/ 23 feet in the long jump, and 14.19 meters/ 46 feet 6.75 inches in the shot put. Except for the high jump, in which he tied his career best, the Grand Rapids, Mich. native set a personal record in every event he participated in on the day.
The Eagles were also represented by freshman Alex Jacobs (Delaware, Ohio - Dublin), who donned the Green and White for the first time. The Delaware, Ohio native sits in fourth overall, and nabbed fourth-place honors in the 60-meter dash and the long jump, wile also taking third in the shot put.
The group will return to action Saturday, Dec. 5, with the remaining pentathlon events at 9 a.m. Following the conclusion of their opening weekend, the Green and White take a long break, as their next meet does not come until the EMU Triangular, Jan. 23, 2016, which is their lone home meet on the season.
