Wrestling To Open MAC Season at Home Against Buffalo

The dual kicks off the 45th season of MAC play for EMU wrestling

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team ends their week by returning home for their first Mid-American Conference dual against Buffalo, Sunday, Dec. 6 at Bowen Field House.  The matchup with the Bulls is set to begin at 2 p.m.

RIDING THE BULLS: The Eagles and Bulls are an even 5-5 against one another since the 2005-06 season.  UB enters Sunday's dual with a 4-1 overall record on the season, with wins over Maryland, Davidson, Springfield College and Lock Haven, while dropping a close dual to West Virginia.

LAST TIME WE MET: Eastern earned its lone Mid-American Conference victory of the 2014-15 season and snapped an eight-dual losing streak, taking down Buffalo, 22-10, with seven bout victories Sunday, Feb. 15.

The Eagles earned six decisions and one major decision en-route to its first conference victory of the season, while UB grabbed one extra-point win and two decisions on the afternoon.

HEAD TO HEAD: Buffalo will have five projected starters in this season's dual who also started in last season's bout.  Two of them, Colt Cotton and Joe Ariola, won their matchups last season.  Meanwhile for EMU, five of their projected starters for Sunday's match return after finding victory in last season's match with the Bulls.

CLEAN SWEEP: Behind a dominating all-around performance from all 10 of their starters, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team shutout Michigan State University 34-0 in a road dual, Wednesday, Dec. 2, at Jenison Field House.

The victory marked the first shutout for the Eagles since the 2012-13 season when the Green and White blanked Itasca Community College 57-0, Nov. 24.  The Eagles earned four major decisions on the night.

UP NEXT ON THE MATS: EMU heads back on the road for its final dual action of 2015, as they travel to Bloomington, Ind. for a pair of duals with host Indiana and Manchester College.  The dual with the Hoosiers is set to begin at 1 p.m., while the matchup with Manchester will begin at 2:30.

DOUBLE TROUBLE: Entering the final season of their storied careers, redshirt seniors Anthony Abro and Vincent Pizzuto are near the top of the EMU record book in career wins.  Abro has 79 while Pizzuto has 80, which is good for 11th and 10th place respectively on the all-time list.  Steve Brown is the program leader in victories, racking up 117 from 1984-88.

ABRO RANKED NATIONALLY: Redshirt senior Anthony Abro is currently ranked 9th at 197 by InterMat wrestling, while also being ranked 16th by TheOpenMat.com  Abro is coming off of his best season as an Eagle, in which he racked up 28 wins, and ended his season with a top-16 finish at the NCAA Championships.  He is currently 9-1 on the year in 2015-16.
