Wrestling Takes MAC Opener Over Buffalo, 30-3

The Eagles have outscored opponents 96-6 in their last three matchups

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team continued to roll through its 2015-16 schedule by taking its Mid-American Conference opener over the University at Buffalo 30-3 Sunday, Dec. 6 at Bowen Field House.
 
The Eagles (5-1, 1-0 MAC) used the strength of thee major decisions and six decisions to take down the Bulls (4-2, 0-1 MAC).  It marked the third straight dual in which EMU won at least nine of its matchups, outscoring oppoents 96-6 in that stretch.
 
Redshirt freshman Dakota Juarez (Grand Haven, Mich.-Grand Haven) got the afternoon started at 165 with four takedowns on his way to an 11-3 major decision.  Redshirt junior Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Mich.-St. Edward) had a hard fought battle at 174, as he led 3-0 going into the third.  A late takedown made the score 3-2, but Davis held on for the decision to give EMU the early 7-0 lead.
 
Redshirt freshman Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven-Brownstown) kept things rolling with a 7-3 decision at 184 that included a pair of takedowns.  No. 9 ranked redshirt senior Anthony Abro (Canton, Mich.-Canton) made the team score 13-0 on a 4-3 decision at 197 that tested the nationally ranked grappler.  With the score standing at 2-1 entering the final period, James Benjamin of Buffalo earned a takedown with about ten seconds remaining, but Abro immediately followed that up with an escape to get the victory.
 
Buffalo earned their lone victory of the day at the heavyweight match, as Jake Gunning of UB earned the 6-3 decision, advancing his record to 5-1 on the year.  Going back to the top, redshirt senior Vincent Pizzuto (North Jackson, Ohio-Jackson Milton) made his 2015-16 season dual debut at 125.  The veteran picked up where he left off, earning a 5-1 decision to keep the Eagles lead comfortable at 16-3.
 
Junior Shayne Wireman (Lansing, Mich.-Holt) returned to the starting lineup at 133 after missing the Michigan State dual but didn't miss a beat, using three takedowns to score an 8-3 decision.  The Eagles followed that up at 141 with redshirt sophomore Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption) earning the second major decision of the day with an 18-5 win, putting the EMU lead at 23-3.
 
In the penultimate bout, redshirt junior Nicholas Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) earned the hard-fought 8-6 decision with three takedowns and a pair of escapes.  Redshirt junior Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson) finished things off with the third Eagle major decision, as he remained unbeaten in duals this season (6-0) with a 9-1 victory.
 
Eastern will now get back on the road when it travels to Bloomington, Ind. for the Indiana Duals, Sunday, Dec. 13.  The day begins with a matchup with the Indiana Hoosiers at 1 p.m., followed by a bout with Manchester College at 2:30 p.m.
