EMU defeated Manchester 46-6 on strength of five falls
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team wrapped up its non-conference schedule by splitting a pair of matchups at the Indiana Duals Sunday, Dec. 13. The Eagles (6-2, 1-0 MAC) defeated Manchester University, 46-6, while dropping a dual with host Indiana, 25-9.
In the first matchup of the day, despite the final score and final decision count (7-3), the dual was closer than the final score would indicate. EMU gave up one major decision and one medical forfeit, while only being outscored by just 12 points in the other five bouts.
Following the tough loss, EMU turned its sights on Division-III opponent Manchester. The Eagles made quick work of the Spartans, notching five pins, a technical fall and two major decisions. The only points allowed were on a forfeit.
Things started off at 184 lbs. where redshirt freshman Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven-Brownstown) dropped a close match 7-6. EMU quickly tied things up after redshirt senior No. 11 Anthony Abro (Canton, Mich.-Canton) posted a 12-6 decision to pick up his 11th win on the year.
EMU took the lead in the heavyweight match as redshirt sophomore Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) took down his opponent for the 6-3 win to give the Eagles the 6-3 lead.
Going back to the top, redshirt senior Vincent Pizzuto (North Jackson, Ohio-Jackson Milton) looked to revenge a loss to Indiana freshman Elijah Oliver earlier in the season, however he was not able to finish his bout, succumbing to an injury forfeit, giving IU the lead back 9-6. Following that up was another close bout at 133 lbs. with junior Shayne Wireman (Lansing, Mich.-Holt). He held his opponent to only one escape point, but could not get on the board himself, losing 1-0.
At 141 lbs., redshirt sophomore Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption), wrestling against his former team, closed the gap in the team score with a thrilling sudden-victory overtime win 10-8, making things 12-9. The Springer victory would close the book on Eagle decisions in the bout though, as they dropped matches at 149 lbs. (4-0), 157 lbs. (13-9), and 165 lbs. (3-1). In the final matchup, redshirt junior Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward) was defeated in a major decision (14-3) by No. 11 Nate Jackson to close out the Hoosier win.
The Green and White had no time to dwell on the defeat as they immediately jumped into the second match of the afternoon with Manchester.
Beginning yet again at 184 lbs., Hillman started things off with a technical fall (17-2) to jumpstart the Eagles to a 5-0 lead. Following that up was Abro with a third period fall (5:37) to extend it to 11-0. Hutchison picked up his second win on the day when also pinned his opponent at the 3:14 mark.
The Eagles then sent out two different wrestlers at 125 lbs. and 133lbs., as redshirt freshman Armando Torres (Lorain, Ohio-Elyria) and redshirt sophomore Blake Caudill (Butler, Pa.-Butler) each stepped up. Both came away with major decisions, Torres by a 15-1 score while Caudill's came by a 14-2 count. The pair of wins put Eastern ahead 25-0.
Making his 2015-16 season debut was redshirt senior Michael Shaw (Allegan, Mich.-Allegan) at 141 lbs. The veteran kept things rolling for EMU with a solid 8-2 decision. MU picked up their only points on the day at 149 lbs. when EMU forfeited the match.
In the final three bouts of the day, EMU put things away making quick work of the Spartans with three consecutive pins. At 157 lbs. redshirt junior Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson) picked up his fourth dual fall of the season, this one in just 14 seconds. Redshirt senior Derek Davison (LaSalle, Mich.-Monroe) notched a fall of his own, this one coming in 1:04. Finally, Davis closed the match with a pin in 2:18, sealing the win.
This marked the end of dual action in 2015 for the Eagles, however their calendar year is not over yet. Next they travel to Reno, Nev. for the Reno Tournament of Champions. The all-day event is scheduled for Sunday, Dec, 20.
