Wrestling Concludes Year at Midlands Championships

Tuesday marks the sixth straight year at the tournament

YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team wraps up its 2015 schedule with a trip to Evanston, Ill. for the 53rd annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships. The two-day tournament begins Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 9:30 a.m. and runs through Wednesday, Dec. 30, with the Championships bouts taking place at 8 p.m.

FAMILIAR TERRITORY: Tuesday marks the sixth straight time EMU wrestling will participate in the Midlands Championships.
TOP NOTCH FIELD: The Midlands Championship always features some of the top teams in the country, and 2015 is no different. Of the 44 teams participating, 13 reside in the top-25 coaches poll. These include Iowa (2), N.C. State (3), Rutgers (8), Nebraska (9), Lehigh (10), Illinois (11), Oklahoma (12), Iowa State (18), Purdue (19), Pittsburgh (20), Ohio (21), Indiana (22), and Old Dominion (24).
THE LAST TIME...: The Eagles earned a total of 24 points, which marked the second-highest point total in Green and White wrestling history as EMU earned 26.5 points in the 2011-12 campaign. As a team, Eastern placed 21st overall, while Iowa took home the crown for the second-straight season 173 points. EMU placed one wrestler in the event, as Brandon Zeerip took seventh place at 157 lbs.
EAGLES PLACE THREE AT RTOC: The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team placed three wrestlers while finishing tenth as a team at the Reno Tournament of Champions, Dec. 20. In total, seven of EMU's grapplers advanced to at least the quarterfinals of their respective brackets.
Eastern traveled 14 wrestlers out west for the tournament. In total they notched 29 wins, while placing redshirt junior Nicholas Barber in fourth place, and junior Shayne Wireman and redshirt senior Anthony Abro in sixth place. This was good for 56 team points, and a tenth place finish out of 24 teams.
UP NEXT ON THE MATS: Eastern kicks off its 2016 slate with the continuation of MAC play at home against the University of Northern Iowa. The dual is set to take place, Wednesday, Jan. 6.
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Entering the final season of their storied careers, redshirt seniors Anthony Abro and Vincent Pizzuto are near the top of the EMU record book in career wins. Abro has 86 career wins, while Pizzuto has 81. This is good for a tie for seventh place and a tie for ninth place on the all-time list, respectively. Steve Brown is the program leader in victories, racking up 117 from 1984-88.
ABRO RANKED NATIONALLY: Redshirt senior Anthony Abro is currently ranked 14th at 197 by InterMat wrestling, while also being ranked 17th by TheOpenMat.com Abro is coming off of his best season as an Eagle, in which he racked up 28 wins, and ended his season with a top-16 finish at the NCAA Championships. He is currently 12-1 on the year in 2015-16.
