YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Throughout the year, one member of the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team will post a journal entry about what has been going on recently with the team, both inside and outside the gym. This week, Sydney McEachern reflects on the exhibition meet with Michigan and a community service event.

Hello Eagle Fans!

The Eagles have had an exciting month! Two weekends ago, we started off by doing a volunteering activity at Food Gatherers. There, we sorted through donated food items and prepared boxes of food to give out to local families in need. In just under two hours, the team put together a total of 139 boxes! We had a lot of fun working together for a great cause and it was an awesome way to start off our weekend!

The weekend continued with our first exhibition meet against the University of Michigan. Pre-competition nerves hit the morning of the meet, but the excitement to get back out on the competition floor soon took over! We had a solid day, hitting 25-of-27 routines throughout the competition. We held our lead against the Wolverines from the first rotation, starting off the meet with a solid line up on bars hitting 7-for-7. Catie Conrad and Kendall Valentin were able to compete their new dismounts for the first time and both hit stunning routines. We carried our success into vault where we once again hit 7 for 7. Floor had a few new faces in the line up and though we had some setbacks, Rachel Slocum finished the rotation off strong with a 9.725! Beam did a great job finishing the meet with a bang and another line up of hit routines! Everyone was very excited to be able to show off our routines in front of judges and an audience of 1,100 fans. It felt great to start off the year with a good performance, giving us the confidence we need heading into our first meet at Pittsburgh on January 10th.

For the last full weekend before finals week, we decided to go out for a team dinner and enjoyed some Christmas spirit together before hitting the books for final exams! With only a few weeks left before our first meet, all the hard work we have put in over the past few months of preseason is starting to pay off. We are looking forward to some family time, but are excited to get back after Christmas to make some final adjustments to routines!
