Eagles Fall in Four Sets to Kent State

11/7/2015 9:42:00 PM | Volleyball

Three players recorded double-doubles in the loss

KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team fell in four sets, Saturday, Nov. 7, to Kent State University (17-9; 11-3 MAC) in Mid-American Conference crossover action. In a match that showcased more offense than defense, the Eagles (12-15; 4-10 MAC) could not keep pace, falling 3-1 (25-11, 19-25, 25-18, 25-20). Senior Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka) led the Green and White with a double-double, posting 15 kills and 16 digs on the night.

Senior Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) led the Eagles with 19 digs while setters Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) and Alyssa Davis (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Plainwell) each posted double-doubles as well. A redshirt freshman, Rajewski tallied a team-high 22 assists in addition to 10 digs, while Davis registered 14 assists and 13 digs.

After dropping the opening set, 25-11, the Eagles responded in a big way in the second frame. Eastern Michigan's attack erupted, boasting a match-best .486 kill percentage. Playing to a 12-12 tie, Davis' ability to distribute the ball at the net lifted the Eagles to a late lead. Davis set freshman Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central), senior Katie Kraswoski (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Marist), and Perinar for kills while Smith anchored the defensive effort to allow the Eagles to take a 20-15 lead late. The Golden Flashes attempted to fight their way back but Perinar and the Eagles put the set away, 25-19, to even the match at one.

In the third set, the stifling serves of Kent State kept the Eagles from laying down a first ball kill. Playing through long rallies, the Eagles failed to overcome an early deficit, falling 25-18.

Like the third set, the Eagles found themselves playing from behind in the fourth set. Trailing 18-14, the Eagles used a 4-1 run to pull within one, 19-18, after senior Devon Murray (Shelby, Ohio - Shelby) hammered down a kill. Unfortunately, that was as close as they would get, as Kent State closed out the set on a 6-1 run to take the set, 25-20, and the match 3-1.

With the loss, the Eagles fall to 12-15 overall and 4-10 in MAC play. The Green and White close out the regular season next weekend, Nov. 13-14, with hopes of fighting their way into the conference tournament. The Eagles will open the weekend, Nov. 13, in Muncie, Ind. against Ball State before taking on Toledo, Nov. 14, in their regular season finale.
