Sophomore Rachel Slocum discusses Halloween fun in the gym and team bonding
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Throughout the year, one member of the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team will post a journal entry about what has been going on recently with the team, both inside and outside the gym. This week, Rachel Slocum discusses Halloween fun in the gym and team bonding.
Hello Eagle Fans,
The Eagles already have our sights set on an exciting upcoming season! We are taking each practice a day at a time as the intensity of our workouts is increasing. Our energy in the gym these past few days has been phenomenal, which makes for excellent practices where everyone is improving in an effort to contribute to the team this season.
This past Saturday, which just so happened to be Halloween, our coaches Jay and Jess Santos surprised us with an impromptu intrasquad. Our two teams, Monster Smash and The Bee's Knees, went head-to-head on bars and beam. On bars, Monster Smash started out strong with some excellently executed routines, thus taking the lead. The Bee's Knee's were able to make a comeback on the balance beam, hitting all five of their routines, but it wasn't enough to overtake Monster Smash, as they were victorious. Although this intrasquad was a surprise and took us off guard, we handled the pressure well, which is a step in helping us prepare for this upcoming season.
Outside the gym, the Eagles are having fun participating in scavenger hunts and riding on haunted hayrides. The coaches split us into two evenly matched teams and we searched EMU's campus to uncover all ten clues. Both groups started off strong but Group One ended up falling short as Group Two took the lead and won it all. Needless to say, there were many laughs and memories made as our team's bond grows stronger heading into the season.
Although the temperature in Michigan may be going down, the intensity of our practices are going up and continue to rise as we prepare for the season. Our team is getting stronger both in and out of the gym, so watch as your Eagles soar into the 2015-2016 season! More updates are on the way!
