YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind 19 points from junior Cha Sweeney (Toledo, Ohio - Rogers), the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team claimed a 70-43 exhibition game win over Wayne State University, Tuesday, Nov. 10. Despite the Eagle offense only shooting 34.4 percent, the Green and White defense gave the Warriors trouble throughout the game, as WSU only managed to shoot 27 percent.
In addition to Sweeney's 19, junior Phillis Webb (Brooklyn Park, Minn. - Osseo) pitched in 15 points and eight rebounds, while senior Chanise Baldwin (Pontiac, Mich. - Martin Luther King) ended the day with nine points and six rebounds. Both senior Rachel Kehoe (St. Clair, Mich. - St. Clair) and junior Janay Morton (Brooklyn Park, Minn. - Osseo) contributed five rebounds apiece.
Although the Eagle offense did not shoot at a high percentage, they converted 24-of-33 at the free throw line. Sweeney was 10-of-12, while sophomore Sasha Dailey (Toledo, Ohio - Rogers) was 5-of-6.
The first half was marked by a defensive battle throughout the first quarter. Neither team could get their offense in rhythm for the first few minutes of the game, as Wayne State had the first basket at 7:30. Sweeney and Webb paced the Eagle offense in the first quarter, notching four points apiece, while Kehoe grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds. At the end of the first, the score stood at 11-8 with the Eagles in the lead.
In the second quarter, however, the Eagle offense began to knock down shots. Early on, a jumper from junior Sheyna Deans (Mt. Clemens, Mich. - Mt. Clemens) and a three-pointer from Sweeney got the offense off to a hot start. A beautiful fast-break layup from Sweeney put the Green and White ahead by double digits, forcing the Warriors to take a timeout with EMU ahead 24-14. The EMU defense stifled Wayne State throughout the quarter, as the Warriors had a nearly six-minute long scoring drought. Although the Warriors grabbed four more points before the half, the Eagles led by 12 at the break, 30-18.
Similar to the first quarter, the Eagle offense struggled to find their shot, as they began 1-of-10 from the field in the third. A Warriors three-pointer cut the EMU lead to eight, but free throws from the Eagles put the Green and White back ahead by double digits. Of the 19 third-quarter points scored by the Eagles, 11 of them came at the charity stripe. At the end of the third, the Eagles led 49-33.
The EMU lead grew to 20 in the fourth-quarter, as Baldwin bullied her way to the basket for two and Morton drained a three-pointer. At the end of the fourth, a quick fast-break layup gave the Eagles their final points, with EMU coming out victorious, 70-43.
The Eagles open the regular season at home with a game against Hillsdale College, Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 7 p.m inside the Convocation Center. Following the bout with the Chargers, the Green and White then host Texas Rio Grande Valley Saturday, Nov. 21, at 2 p.m.
