The EMU women's cross country team is ready to capture their first conference title

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — With the regular season behind them, the Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team will travel to Canton, Ohio for the 2015 Mid-American Conference Championships, Saturday, Oct. 31. After their solid performance at last year's race, the Eagles will look to take home their first conference title in the history of the program.

Last season, Victoria Voronko led the Eagles to the runner-up spot at the conference championship, as she was the first harrier to cross the finish line, which marked the first time an EMU runner was crowned champion since 1997. Although she has since graduated, the Green and White return plenty of firepower from the 2014 lineup. The team will rely heavily upon the experienced trio of senior Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium - Univ. of Leuven), sophomore Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. - Davison), and senior Amy Frauhammer (Saline, Mich. - Saline). All three finished within the top-40 at the race, with Gallein placing third, McDermitt coming in 9th, and Frauhammer finishing in 35th. The lineup will also be bolstered by junior transfer Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia - Lyceum #83), who has become a mainstay in the Eagle lineup.

Head Coach Sue Parks is excited to see her team put it all together, as they have shown flashes of excellence throughout the season. When discussing the team as a whole, she stated "I'm expecting a great competition and we're excited to put it all together as a team. We've had some good races by various individuals and some solid team finishes throughout the season, but we're ready to perform to the best of our ability as a team. If we do that, I feel that we're going to be happy with the result.

Individually, Parks highlighted three harriers whom she expects to be primary contributors for the race, stating "We have three strong individuals, all of whom have a chance at finishing high in the race. Sofie Gallein, who finished third last season, Jordann McDermitt, who placed ninth last year, and Alsu Bogdanova all have a chance to do very well. It will be exciting to see what they can do against the other top performers in the MAC."

The race will be a 6,000-meter course, with the women set to begin at Noon in the Canton GlenOak Community Park. More information on the event can be found by clicking here.
