YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After a quick 0-2 start, the Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team will hit the road for a pair of matches this week. The Eagles will travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. for a matchup with IPFW Friday, Jan. 30, before traveling to the University of Wisconsin for a dual-match with the Big Ten Conference foe Sunday, Feb. 1.
It will be the third time in school history that the Mastodons and Eagles have tangled on the court. Eastern has not lost to IPFW in their first two contests, including a 5-2 victory at the Chippewa Club last season, Jan. 25, 2014. In that match, the Eagles lost the doubles match before winning 5-of-6 singles contests versus the Mastodons. Diana Davitaia was the only Eagle to come up on the losing side of the ledger, falling 6-3, 6-2 to Mayu Sato at No. 1-singles. Nino Mebuke came away with an easy 6-1, 6-0 finish, giving EMU their first point of the day. Mariya Toncheva wasn't far behind, notching a 6-2, 6-0 win over Sofia Sorokina at No. 3-singles, putting EMU up 2-0. Davitaia's loss was the next decision, knotting things up at two points apiece. Maria Paula Ribero came in to win 6-4, 6-1 in straight sets, putting Eastern back up, 3-2. Daphne Friedrichs sealed the match at No. 4-singles, topping Miloslava Shustova, 6-3, 6-2. Zsofia Biro then gave the Eagles an extra point by knocking off Carlota Trevino, 6-4, 6-4.
Eastern and Wisconsin have met just three times in series history. The Badgers have not dropped a match to the Eagles as EMU trails 0-3. The last time these two schools saw one another was during the 2011-12 campaign when the Badgers knocked off the Green and White by a score of 6-1.
