Eastern cruised to a 5-2 victory over the Mastodons

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University's women's tennis team recorded its first dual match victory of the 2015 campaign Friday, Jan. 30, when the Eagles (1-2) knocked off IPFW, 5-2, in Fort Wayne. The Green and White took the doubles point before recording wins in 4-of-6 singles matches.

In doubles play, the duo of Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna and Daphne Friedrichs knocked off IPFW's Sara Sherif and Alina Schibol, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot before Klara Supejova and Andrea Martinovska teamed up in the No. 1 singles position to defeat Marcy Huck and Mayu Sato, 6-3. The No. 2 doubles match, play was suspended after the final of the No. 1 match with EMU's Ani Gogvadze and Maria Paula Ribero trailing, 3-4.

Gogvadze led the way in singles play, defeating Schibol, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 2 slot to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead before Friedrichs made it 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win versus IPFW's Sofia Sorokina in the fourth position. Supejova had a chance to finish the match for EMU, but came up just short against Sato, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot. Martinovska clinched the match for Eastern, giving the Eagles their fourth point in a three set, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, victory over Carlota Trevino in the third slot, while freshman Anna Veleva dropped a 6-2, 7-5 match at No. 5. Ribero closed out the dual with a three set 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (8), win, defeating Sara Sharif in the No. 6-singles slot.

"It was a hard fought win today," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We definitely have a lot to improve upon. Again, with experience and confidence we will play cleaner tennis.  I expect a good battle with Wisconsin on Sunday."

The Eagles return to action Sunday, Feb. 1, when they head to Madison, Wisc. to square off with the Badgers of the University of Wisconsin. First serve is slated for 11 a.m. at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on campus at UW.
