The Eagles had a pair of singles victories to record their points
MADISON, Wisc. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University's women's tennis team fell in a road match Sunday, Feb. 1. The Eagles (1-3) dropped a 5-2 decision at the hands of Big Ten Conference foe, the University of Wisconsin.
The Badgers (1-1) took two of three doubles matches as the No. 2-doubles duo of Ani Gogvadze and Maria Paula Ribero dropped Wisconsin's Lauren Chypyha and Maria Avgerinos, 6-4. Despite the victory at No. 2-doubles, the Eagles were on the other end of a pair of 6-4 decisions, giving UW a 1-0 lead heading into singles action.
Gogvadze was one of two wearing the Green and White to come away with a singles win. The freshman knocked off Sydney Rider, 7-6, 6-4, at the No. 2-singles position. Another freshman, Anna Veleva, came away with the first collegiate victory of her young career by defeating Elizabeth Konana, 7-5, 6-4, in the sixth singles position. Eastern lost three straight set contests, while Ribero took Lauren Burich to three sets, but fell in the third, 11-9.
"Disappointing loss today," stated Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We have to get tougher mentally and start winning these level of matches. We just didn't get the full team performance we need to start getting each and every match.
The Green and White is back in action Saturday, Feb. 7, in Lincoln, Neb. The Eagles will take on Drake at 11 a.m. on a neutral court at the University of Nebraska.
